I'm looking into buying a "Smithy granite 1340 max" any advice? I know having two machines is better than an mill/lathe combo machine but i just don't have the room. Does anyone have this machine or any experience with one? ANY advice is well appreciated.

Having recently jumped into machining, I would suggest you look around for some used equipment. Lots of benchtop lathes on craigslist and in the paper. The combo machine looks handy IF the lathe compound is powered in the X and Y axis. Manually cranking handles gets old if you plan to do alot of milling.

I am usre there are pros and cons for a combo machine, I can see one being useful, but not able to replace a lathe, or come close to being as capable as an upright mill.

Can you post the specs to it? Navigating Smithy's site blows large girthy donkey wang.

Depending on what you want to do with the lathe, the mill head and spindle thru size may pose issues. Since I have turned a few barrels recently I could not imagine having that mill head in the way. Plus having a lathe with a 2.5" spindle bre sure makes fooling with barrels easy. Sure you can use a steady rest, but it is just another thing to get in the way of the carriage. Barrels flex quite a bit while turning. Being able to work up close to the chuck is a must IMO.

If you will be looking to turn rifle barrels then get a lathe with a minimum spindle bore of 1.3". The 3" tailstock barrel travel might be limiting as well for certain bore indicating operations.

Thanks to all of y'all for your help and advise. With prices being almost equivalent, I'm now leaning toward going with the Grizzly "G4003G Gunsmith's Bench Top Lathe with Stand" AND the Grizzly "G0705 Drill/Mill with Stand 29 inch x 8 inch Table".
    Lathe http://www.grizzly.com/products/Gunsmith-s-Bench-Top-Lathe-with-Stand/G4003G
    Mill http://www.grizzly.com/products/Drill-Mill-with-Stand-29-inch-x-8-inch-Table/G0705
Let me know what y'all think, with all the research Ive done up till now I think I'll be a lot happier with these two choices vs the all-in-one machine.

If you are going to buy a mill make sure you get something with power feed on the X axis. Turning the wheels gets to be tiring...

I have a Grizzly G4003G and I love it !! I've done lots of barrel / suppressor work on it and it always performs. It's a little better fit and finish than a Harbor Freight machine. I have some videos of it working on YouTube : swlamech84

I'll most likely be selling mine soon because of a relocation. I'm going to pick up another one as soon as I can !

i am a machinist and i do some gun work on my guns, you can spend a small fortune on tooling not to mention the machines. i would take the above advice and get a used lathe and mill, the smity machines are ok but if you are going to do gun work you need a dedicated lathe and mill.
