Not looking for a rifle to use at the range. Hunting, and I guess if SHTF scenario I could use it. Wouldn't be used as my primary home defense gun either. Price for rounds isn't really an issue. Which would you choose and why?

If you're going to get an odd-ball AR, get the oddest. I'm assuming you want this for fun and as a conversation piece. The socom will make a better conversation piece, imo. Also, I don't know for sure, but I believe it would be wicked for white tail.

It's an illogical bias I have, but I just wouldn't personally get a 300 blackout unless I was getting a suppressor for it.

Have you though about 6.8 spc II or 454 bushmaster? The bushy has interesting reloading options, if you hand load.

Im going 300bo. Why? Only change is barrel and I can reload using my spent 556. A 16" barrel ia pushing 2100ft. That pretty could considering you dont have to change that much on the gun. Plus wih a 16" car lenggt you can shoot reg. Sub and super. Where as with a shorter barrel and suppresor you are limited.

    I have a 300. It's killed I think 11 hogs and 2 deer.

I'm sure someone will tell me why it sucks.

But I like it out to 300+ yards. Which is very far.
It's not far for the guys that hunt 800lb. Hogs and take 1000 yard shots with their redfield 3x9 scope

What he said. For anything under 300yds 300BLK more than gets the job done. Also shares mags with your 5.56 ARs, and opens up options for suppression and other uses down the road.

Is like to add that I have also shot my 300 about 1000 times. I am proficient with it.

I hate hunters who buy bigbore and shoot one box of ammo over a few YEARS. Then talk about a 300-800 yard shot

    300 isn't big bore. And 1000 rounds isn't allot.

Yea, well, I once took the cinnamon challenge and won.

OP: seriously either one is going to do what you want it to do. Getting brass for your 458 will be harder than 300... that's honestly about the only thing I can really say is going to be a factor since you already said price is moot. I've shot 1" with off the shelf Hornady AMax subs at 100yds with my 10.5" barreled 300blk. Either round suppresses quite well. 300blk is more suited to short barrels than 458, imo. Both are gonna kill **** pretty well. Home defense... either one will be similar performance with aptly chosen bullets. Capacity obviously goes to the 300 over 458. I think 300blk is also less prone to magazine-related feeding issues, as well. 458 can be "picky" about mags. 300 mainly tops out at what... 230gr bullets? I can't recall seeing heavier. 458 tops out at like 500gr bullets that I recall seeing. So if you want something that's just like "woohoo big badass" type ****, then 458 wins.

If none of those things make you lean one way or the other, then flip a coin. :D

Decide on 1 rifle, and then buy an upper in the other caliber. Take advantage of the AR platform!
lol you should be in sales.

If you load your own ammo, then 458 is super fun.. If you want to be able to buy ammo at Academy then get the 300..

458 is super fun, and can send a 325 gr Hftx 1900 fps.. thats a big ol bullet going really fast.. but there is a trade off, it does have some recoil..

    they have different jobs..

The 458 is fun but once the novelty of shooting obnoxiously large rounds out of an AR wears off and you realize that even the reloads cost $2.50 a round its kind of annoying. I own a 458 and two 300 blackouts and I like them just fine but if I had to pick a caliber to hunt with I'd definitely go with the 6.8 spc. Just my two cents

My .458 Socom is AK platform...... The additional weight helps with the recoil.....
TROMIX made only two of these.....

I think the 300, ammo should be easier to find (unless you reload) and there is the ability to fire both light and heavy bullets. Firing a quieter round may be a handy option.

How much killing power do you need for game around here?
