I would advise against carrying in a purse, purse snatching is one of the more common crimes that happen to women.

Depends on the woman, there are many good choices in .38 revolvers and 9mm pistols. I would have her shoot a few before she decides what is best for her.
For my wife it is a 9mm G26. She also likes to shoot a .45 G21 but it is too big for her to carry.

I wouldn't advise carrying in a purse. There are holster options out there that work very well with slim guns. I would go with something like a shield or LC9 before I recommend a revolver for a woman. 38 special isn't all that special coming out of a small frame revolver.

Shooting +P in that air weight it has more felt recoil than a .45 Glock.

My Fiance shoots it with no problem and it doesn't feel like a 45 glock at all. With the trigger upgrade and spring upgrade I did to it for her, she loves it, and for P+ we only use Hornady Critical in our guns, no clue on other brands.

For her purpose it is meant to save her life, .38 P+ at close range (because no matter what people think, when the **** goes down its not 15+ Feet away) it is devastating and will stop someone with a center mass shot. I have both shields, lc9, kahr, S&W airweights, etc.. and she liked that one the best.

    I'm 23 and carry either a Ruger sr9c or a G19 at 3 o'clock.

I don't recommend purse carry either. The only time I EVER do this is if I'm wearing something super clingy or if I'm wearing a dress.

FWIW my next purchase will be a G26.

    RedStickChick,

Has anyone mentioned that you shouldn't carry it in a purse? Maybe more than once. Ok now I'll assume you know that and as an adult will make the best decision you can given what you have to wear for that day. :)

Why not carry the GLOCK or Ruger in your purse? Or are talking about a very small purse, like a clutch?

If so and you're familiar with GLOCK's already could you go with one of those baby GLOCKs maybe?

No. I'm not hitting on you. You're 20 years younger than me. :)

Yea, purse carry isn't ideal at all, but if that's what it takes to start someone feeling comfortable carrying one- have at it. The guns he has is better than the gun she leaves home or decided not to bother with. It might take time to bring someone around on the bad idea of purse carry.

http://www.youtube.com/user/faliaphotography has a poop load of ways to show that even small framed women can comfortably conceal, and shows it in many different styles/formalities of dress.

I'd go with a G19, or if that is too big for some of the purses she plans to carry it in, the baby sized Glock. 9mm works well. I'd stay away from the little airweight frames. I'm a big dude with meaty fists and I really hate those airweight revolvers. I hate standard loads in airweights. They are not fun to shoot. I don't like 'em at all and can't imagine anyone would like it enough to practice much.

Oh, and if she is going to carry off-body, either put a regular holster in the purse or, more likely, use something like this to cover/protect the trigger/triggerguard.

Get that young lady out shooting!!! If presented with a number of options to shoot, it won't take long and she will be able to tell you what SHE wants to carry.

My wife's pistol is a Gen 3 G26. I recently let her shoot 6 different 9mm pistols with the same type ammunition and she shot her old G26 best so no change for her any time soon.
She has not shot my Gen 3 G21 lately and asked why I did not bring it for her to shoot. Together we shot 9 different 9mm pistols and that was enough pistols to clean in one day.
