I have to say that my first impressions are leaving me with a good sized woody. After hearing about DPMS' next generation .308 MSR (Modern Sporting Rifle - Generation 1 was the LR308) I really wanted to get my hands on one of these to try it out and see if it can hold it's own. The upper to lower fit is solid and tight but I still can't get over the weight savings and size. It really does feel like a standard AR-15 in the hand. I bought the 20" barreled GII Hunter with the Magpul stock and carbon fiber handguard. I wanted to compare it to my mid-length 16" Seekins rifle for feel and weight but even with 4" more barrel length it's a huge difference.
GII 308 on the left and SP-556 on the right...
Granted, I didn't take the ACOG off of the SP-556, but it came in at 146oz (9.13lbs)
And as advertised, the GII came in at 124oz (7.75lbs)
Comparing it side by side with the original LR308 it's obvious how much they cleaned up on the GII. It doesn't feel as blocky and cumbersome. It still has the solid lock up and refinement of the first generation, but in a much lighter and svelte body.
Once I get some time to bring her out to the range I plan to see if the accuracy is living up to the claims of an even better built .308 by DPMS. I've had some good ones that shot great and if this one does as well I may have to start using an auto for my main deer go to gun! Range report to follow.
