I'm thinking about buying a new 25hp tiller handle outboard. I'm looking at evinrude, yamaha and mercury what do you use and why?

My preference is either a Mercury or a Yamaha. The main reason is those are the brands I have been around most of my life and are more familiar with.
I currently have 2 boats with larger motors, one being a Yamaha 115 and the other is a Johnson 150 that my dad had bought before he passed away. In my experience, the Yamaha gives me far less issues than the Johnson.

I have also previously owned a Mercury 40 with the tiller on a small boat similar to what you are talking about, I had bought that one 14 years ago, sold it to my neighbor 3 years ago, and it is still chugging along with no problems.

Yamaha. Because I have a 1990 model 25 that is still going strong. It was my uncle's before it was mine. He bought it new and lived on the river where it was used daily until 2007. Not to mention the fact that they appear to be the hands-down favorite of crawfishermen in the basin.

This too. I also had a Yamaha 115 on an 18' Bay Boat. My neighbor has a Johnson on his. I never had an issue with mine, but it seems like his has something or another that has to be addressed nearly every time he tries to use it, and I don't think it's lack of care on his part. He's an engineer, and keeps his stuff up pretty well.

Buy a 4 stroke. Best extra money you will spend. Yamaha would be my choice.

Probably good advice, although I have never owned a 4 stroke boat motor, I hear they get good fuel mileage out of them.

One thing I will say for certain, whether you get a 4 or 2 stroke engine is be aware of the ethanol crap they have in gasoline now. Try to find a non-ethanol fuel source if you can, if not, use a good fuel stabilizer and run the engine often. The majority of issues I have had with not only boat motors, but small engines in general is the ethanol causing carb problems.

always try to remember to unplug the fuel from the motor after you put it on the trailer and while it's running in the water and let it run dry, which seems to help since if the carb is empty, any ethanol in the fuel can't hurt it.

There's a reason most of the commercial fishermen run Yamaha's on their crawfish boats. Mercury is a good choice as well. Make sure to run the fuel out of it when you put it on the trailer.

My first outboard was a tiller handle 25hp Yamaha that was a late 80s model.
Second was a 40hp Yamaha with console early 90s.
    Now I have a 2005 90hp Yamaha console.
All have been 2 strokes and only issue I ever had was after a service the carbs were out of sync and the engine would bog down. Brought it back ion to shop, they acknowledged the mistake and its been running like a champ since.

I'm not sure how the smaller yamahas are but I tell you what, 98% of the boats I see go offshore out of Venice runs yamahas. I have no experience with them but those guys run those engines day in and day out.

I picked up a new 25 Yamaha 4 stroke. Got 2hrs on it and so far I like it a lot.

While I like Mercury a lot I didn't know that most of them are being made by tohatsu.
