The Louisiana Constitution says you have a right to carry a gun.
However, a KATC investigation found it may not be legal in some Acadiana cities.
In fact, a 90-year-old law in the city of Opelousas bans openly carrying a gun, along with all other dangerous weapons, including bowie knives, razors, and long thrusting daggers called dirks.
A law on the books in Abbeville says it's against the law for anyone to carry or possess on his/her person any pistol, handgun, rifle, shotgun or any other firearm. It doesn't matter if it's concealed or not.

"Typically the way it will happen--and I'm surprised it hasn't happened before--somebody will open carry in Abbeville, they'll be stopped perhaps by the police, and arrested for open carry," said KATC Political Analyst Dr. Pearson Cross. "If it does get to court, because they want to make a test case, then they would claim that they are, that it's protected behavior under the Louisiana Constitution, and they would very likely win and, at that point, they would strike down that law."
