Can anyone help me pick out kind of your standard, low budget shotgun? I'm looking to spend less than $300, open to suggestions

I would look for an 870 over a mossberg, mainly because the safety is in a much better place. If you weren't looking to do any modifications I'd take a winchester 1300 over either.

Don't overlook the Mossberg Maverick pump action. I've had a home defense 18 inch setup for over 15 years w. zero problems. I recently picked up an extra 28 in. barrel for hunting, on e-bay, for less than $80.00.

I picked up a Mossberg Maverick Security 88 from Academy for under $200. The safety is in a good place on this model. It's basically the 500 but relocated safety and the forend is all one piece so you can't change it out without buying parts from the 500.

You can change out pretty much everything else though with anything that fits a Mossberg 500. I have the knoxx folding stock on mine and a sidesaddle I modified so the stock can fold. Looks nice, stores easily, ready to go in a couple of seconds if need be.

Mossberg Maverick shotgun for 189.00 or Mossberg 500 shotgun for 209.00 new at walmart. Also Remington 870 Express
    Pump for 299.00.
Supposed to be 20% off on Black Friday.
I have found Remington 870 Express for 200.00 and less at pawn shops.
I think the Mossberg thumb safety on the receiver is a lot faster and superior to a push safety on the trigger guard.
Most O/U or side by side shotguns have thumb safeties on the tang.

Pawn shop, look for Mossberg 500 or Remington Wingmaster. Got my Wingmaster for under $200. It ain't the prettiest thing, but it is a sweet shooter. Also, as stated, the Mav 88 is a very good gun for the $.

Under 300 there are a wide variety of good shotguns available. What exactly are you wanting it for? Nice used 1100s can be had in that price range even.
I will say that the maverick88 is a great gun for the money. I have had one for a long time, got it when the everyday price was $130. It has probably had more cases of shells thru it than any of my other shotguns, never any issues. I bought it to have a beater gun that if it was dropped in the water or left in the truck, damaging it wouldn't hurt my feelings, but it is such a great shooter, it is my go to 12ga. And to boot, it still looks as new as the day I got it. Mine has sold quite a few others on buying one for themselves.

I bought an Escort pump shotgun from Academy for 199+tax.
Turkish gun with Turkish walnut stock patterned after the Remington 870 and came with 3 choke tubes and 3 stock adjustment shims. Shoots great and will make a great brush busting shotgun with a matte finish.

This. Right here. I picked up my 870 at a local pawn shop for $225 and I never looked back. All the gun needed was a really good cleaning ... it's been as reliable as the day is long, doo-dads are easy to get for it and I know I can sell it in a New York minute if I ever needed to.

EDIT: ... and I missed the post saying that the OP had already bought something. I'm going to get some water to wash down my foot ...

... congrats on the purchase. When can we expect photos of the new toy? :D
