I was visiting family in Little Rock and noticed a gun shop so I dropped in. I wound up leaving with an IAC Hawk 982 for around $250.00. It's a Chinesse 870 knockoff. It has an 18" barrel and Ghost Ring sights. I'm using it as a home defense weapon so it won't be getting a lot of rounds through it. Fit and finish is just OK . Accurate gun that will do the job IMHO.

    I've got a Maverick 88. Great shooter.

I took the end off the stock, and filled the cavity with about a pound of double ended wad cutters, wrapped in an old T shirt. My shoulder thanked me.

Just a warning, not all cheap shotguns are good to go, even if they are pump action. You would think it is difficult to make pump action unreliable; however, I have owned and subsequently got rid of the exceptions.

The story: my friend and I saw the ATI Tac Px2 pump shotguns on sale from Palmetto State Armory last year for $140 and jumped on them. Bad move. His would only hold 4 in the magazine tube, while mine held 5 2.75-inch shells. I took apart his after a month and discovered the factory monkey put 2 followers in. His pump now works fine as far as I know.

Now, I thought I was the lucky one. Boy was I wrong. After going to the range, I kept experiencing misfeeds every 10-15 shells. The shells would not feed into the chamber but get stuck midway. So, I thought, "Hey, it just needs to be broken in." After the 4th range trip and the issue didn't resolve, I just gave up on it. Note: if your pump action needs to be broken in, something is surely wrong with it.

I'm not saying inexpensive shotguns are all bad because the Mossberg Maverick 88 is well-made and reliable as heck. Just don't get fooled by cheap pricetags on unknown Turkish guns like me.

    This is a great Thread....
I have to say if you're looking for an inexpensive - quality pump shotgun, look at the Escort Pump available in 20 or 12 gauge at Academy. I bought TWO in 12 gauge and they are very reliable.
It's pretty much a Remington 870 with an upgraded barrel. (Much like many military weapons, the barrel and chamber is Chrome Lined!!) The action is very smooth and the gun consistently gets the job done.
It can be purchased for under $200.00!! (They just had a sale @ $149.99 and that was a Super STEAL!!!) But well worth paying the regular price. It comes with sling attachment points and 3 chokes.

Can anyone help me pick out kind of your standard, low budget shotgun? I'm looking to spend less than $300, open to suggestions

I see used Mossberg 500s and Remington 870s in that zone, give or take. Late last year I was able to pick up a Stoeger Coach Gun SxS for $299 and isn't bad for three C-notes. I'm using it as the basis for a Form 1 SBS project once the stamp arrives. :D

I don't have any direct experience with the Maverick line, but a friend of mine from Metairie has one and thinks it is the cat's pajamas.
