I'll be making a road trip soon, which will involve passing through Alabama, and I keep hearing things about having to lock your gun up when in the state. I've been searching for a law on this and can't find anything. Maybe my Google-Fu is weak, idk. If someone can shed some light on the subject, I would appreciate it.

Dave, I've heard the same thing. However, they have reciprocity with LA so it is a non issue if you have your CCP

That was my first thought. They have reciprocity, so why would they have "different" rules?

Seeing as you've heard it also, it seems to be a silly rumor going around. I've even heard it from some reputable instructors, so it's sparked my curiosity.

As of Aug. 1, 2013, transportation of a handgun in a vehicle is allowed without an Alabama Pistol Permit if you are legally permitted to possess the handgun. The handgun but be unloaded, locked in a container or container that is in or affixed securely to the vehicle and out of reach of the driver or any passenger. [Source]

If you have a Alabama Pistol Permit you can carry concealed in the vehicle.

Loaded long guns may be carried in plain view or in gun cases.

Well that answers the question if someone doesn't have a Louisiana CHP, but I have a CHP. So, I should be good to go as far as carrying while driving through Bama, correct?

If u mind your P's and Q's you shouldn't have to worry about it. I've been through Alabama 100"s of times and never had an issue. It's not like they set up a roadblock at the border checking citizen's. Just be cool about it.

That is terrible advice, and it's not helpful to my original question.

I drove through Saturday and driving through again tomorrow. I've been stopped before (not this trip), told them I had a CC and they let me off with a warning.

I'll be driving to Florida in about three months, trying to do my research as well. Does their law say that the gun has to be physically on you if it's loaded or can I have it holstered on either the center console or a mounted holster?

With a Florida Concealed Weapon License or a license or permit from a state that Florida recognizes licenses or permits from, you are allowed to carry concealed in a vehicle.

If you do not have a recognized permit, you are allowed to carry firearm in a vehicle as long as it is securely encased or is not otherwise readily accessible. Examples of securely encased would be in a gun case, glovebox or in a holster with a retention strap. An example of not otherwise readily accessible would be locked in the trunk of your car.

Is it the same for Alabama?
