So I am well aware that to take any outlaw quadruped you have to use the firearms that are in season, so right now the only thing in season are teal and other migratory birds. Obviously most shooters use a shotgun, but I was wondering if I could carry my Rem 597 22 mag to shoot some nutria. Or is rimfire not a legal firearm to take migratory birds? Just wondering anything will help.

BTW I shot a huge nutria the other day on Maurepas WMA.

Outlaw Quadruped laws are not the same on WMA as on private land ( Private land in most cases is year round). You must consult the 2015-2016 Hunting regs for each specific WMA as they are all differant. You may or may not have broken the law at Maurepas

The short answer is no you can't. October 1st (assuming that's when squirrel season starts in you area) is when you can use a 22 for nuisance animals.

    Edit: October 3rd this year

I carry a .22 Mag for Small Game & varmints. Ran into a sounder of approx. 30+ hogs on a WMA & was glad I had the firepower. Took pics of at least 10 dead & shot quite a few more.

Hey I'm kind of interested as well, love the rifle!
    Mag capacity? Easy to find?

I picked-up the rifle for $400 new; it came w/ (1) 5-Round Mag. The Manuf. makes a 10-Round Mag. that can be easily found at local Gun Shops or online for about $30; I bought (2) and taped em back-to-back for quick follow-up shots.

I cut these 2 sows out of a pack at 9:00 AM on the Spring Squirrel Season Opener; one must have been 250-300 lbs.
First time I hunted with the recently installed 1.5-4.5 Turkey Scope; it has a circle in the center of the reticle and worked really well for quick sight-acquisition.
