Edwards Keeps Salaries He Called "Exorbitant!"

When he was a candidate, John Bel Edwards said Louisiana’s Cabinet secretaries were paid too much by then-Gov. Bobby Jindal, calling the salaries “exorbitant.” But since he moved into the Governor’s Office, Edwards has kept most of those salaries in place and boosted them further in some instances.

Edwards is paying the leaders of two executive branch agencies more than they received under his predecessor, according to payroll data and pay rate announcements reviewed by The Associated Press. And the governor has kept most other Cabinet secretary salaries intact even though some were criticized as excessive when Jindal hired people at those rates.

Top advisers in the Governor’s Office are getting higher paychecks as well, with more six-figure salaries for Edwards’ executive staff than Jindal paid.

Decisions by Edwards to keep Jindal’s salary levels — and bump some paychecks higher — come as Louisiana grapples with its worst budget troubles in nearly 30 years. Public colleges and health services are threatened with deep cuts, and Edwards is asking lawmakers to raise taxes to fill gaps.

And the pay rates don’t dovetail with Edwards’ rhetoric when he ran for office. The Democratic candidate bristled at the Jindal administration’s salaries when questioned about them in a November runoff debate.

“We’re not going to pay the same salaries that Bobby Jindal’s been paying. They’re exorbitant. They’re too high. We’re going to reduce those costs right off the top,” Edwards said at the time.

But since becoming governor, Edwards, who receives a $130,000 salary outlined in state law, appears to have changed his mind.

The Edwards administration said the governor is structuring the executive branch differently than his Republican predecessor to operate it more efficiently, is paying fewer people to do more work and is cutting back on outside lawyers that Jindal frequently used.

“Unlike in the past, Gov. Edwards is working to bring Louisiana talent back to the Governor’s Office,” Edwards spokesman Richard Carbo said in a statement. “The salaries reflect his interest in bringing the best and brightest people from here in Louisiana to help him lead the state at a very difficult time.”

The highest-paid Cabinet official in the Edwards administration is Revenue Secretary Kimberly Robinson, who is tasked with helping devise and shepherd through the Legislature a tax package aimed at raising new money to help stabilize the budget.

Robinson kept the same pay Jindal gave his last revenue secretary, Tim Barfield: $250,000 a year.

But when Jindal announced Barfield’s salary three years ago, it caused consternation in the Legislature because it was twice what the job paid previously. Barfield initially took a different title to get that pay rate, in a work-around until the Legislature agreed to raise the salary cap. Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, chairwoman of the Louisiana Democratic Party, unsuccessfully tried to block Barfield’s appointment.

While he kept the revenue secretary salary flat, Edwards boosted another of the top paychecks in his administration, to Commissioner of Administration Jay Dardenne, who serves as the governor’s chief financial adviser and is leading state budget-rebalancing efforts.

A Republican former lieutenant governor, Dardenne is receiving a $237,500 annual salary, a more than $33,000 increase.

Drawing the same salary is Edwards’ pick for economic development secretary, Don Pierson. His $237,500 pay rate is less than the $320,000 Jindal gave Stephen Moret in the economic development job — a widely disparaged salary. But Pierson is receiving the same salary as the man who filled the job after Moret left state government.

Edwards bumped up the pay for his transportation secretary by nearly $7,000 to $176,900 annually.

Salaries have been raised for Edwards’ executive staff as well.

For example, the $180,000 salary allotted to Edwards’ executive counsel is $15,000 more than Jindal’s chief lawyer received, and the $110,000-a-year pay rate for Edwards’ communications director is $16,400 higher.

Edwards dropped one Cabinet-level salary. His homeland security director will receive $135,000 a year for the job, $30,000 less than Jindal paid.

I guarantee, there is a lot more to come! ;)

The sad thing is an audit revealed the La. lost over 1 Billion Dollars last year to **** poor management, lack of oversight & incompetence. In the private sector these individuals would at the least be fired or prosecuted. In government this is expected & accepted. Why doesn't he do something about this type of waste? Thanks a lot to everyone who voted for this Turd.

So what exactly about any of the canidates would make you think they would do any better about the waste, fraud, and abuse that you are complaining about. If you think they would you are fooling yourself. Now that said any of them would have been better on the "issues" but lets be honest polititians spend our money like drunk sailors on shore leave, and the R's and D's are just there to know who's a gun steeling baby killer and who's not.

I don't know if any of them would do any better. The point I was making is if these clowns would put a stop to the waste they wouldn't have to raise taxes. If more people gave a damn about where the state & country in general is headed things might possibly change.

Agreed! The thing is the American people defind insanity at nearly every primary and every election. We keep electing the same people or types of people and wonder why in 2-4-6-8 years nothing has changed things are still on the downward slide. Then if the polititian is up for re-election they basically campaign against (in truth) themselves and if they are a phony lib. the "evil rich" and promise if you just elect them everything will be better but it never is.

The outcome will not change if we dont change the action.

Today I was notified that Edwards plans on cutting services to special needs kids and adults (NOW waiver and some Medicaid benefits for special needs adults). Most of this is money that is matched by the federal government. A lot of this goes to sitting services so the parents of special needs kids can work. SO, we put the sitters out of work and on unemployment and loose income tax on their salary. The families make less money since one parent now has to stay home, again loosing state revenue. The federal matching money is gone. And this saves money for the state.

Not to be critical or tedious, but I prefer the nickname given to Saint John Bel by the online blog "The Hayride". They called him "The Catfish" which was a name Uncle Earl K. Long gave to a politician of his generation. He said the guy was like a catfish - "slimey and could talk outta one side of his mouth and whistle outta the other at the same time! And I got proof!" Never did see the proof but "the Catfish" just makes me laugh everytime I think about it and its source.

I wonder if The Catfish ( funny) will be raked over the hot coals in the newspapers like Jindal was when he is forced to produce a balanced budget and cuts higher education and healthcare. He will probably get a pass like O'bama did by blaming the previous admin. I still think La. spends way too much on healthcare. Other larger states manage on much, much less. Maybe we don't need state-run charity hospitals. I agree that salaries and vehicles and other government waste and exorbitance should be trimmed, but most of that is symbolic and doesn't add up to the kind of shortfalls they need to fill. I do think that cost cutting at every level, can make a dent.
I work for one of the largest companies in the world and we are considered very successful, you know, we make money in spite of ourselves. Every so often, the company will put the brakes on spending. this means you don't just order reams of paper, business cards, tools, travel, etc. Of course we need to buy things to operate, but everything gets extra scrutiny and is looked at as if we really need it to function. i think the state could follow that kind of belt tightening and possibly develop a mindset among employees that cutting expenses is a top priority. I'm sure people who work for the state would chime in here and say that is already occurring. Bottom line is we spend too much money and the majority of the budget is protected, so it will continue to be tough on higher ed and healthcare. So much so that the catfish will have to raise taxes, because every good democrat knows that's how you fix it.

Well said and there lies the problem with government they aren't spending money that eventually affects their bottom line, perhaps we should look at ways to base government salaries on performance much like the private sector, you dont perform you dont get a raise you continue not to perform up to acceptable standards you get the opportunity to take your "skill set" elsewhere and see if it works out better for you. A huge problem with government today from the parish/city level through the state and the feds is they have gotten away from their fundamental function and waste time money energy on things that a republican form of government was never supposed to involve itself in and a large part of that is because dumbing down in government run schools most people think this is a democracy when it wasnt supposed to be and most people look to government for solutions when they should come from self. *The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money.*

Spot on. We fill the young twerps heads full of dribble. Every type of government literally every type of government I have had the "pleasure" of dealing with pisses money down the drain on pipe dreams, and in my career I spent time auditing small towns, villages, fire departments, mosquito control districts, just to name a few. When I say its boarderline mintal illness I'm chit you not. Even the ones who you talk to who are generally conservitives, who beleve in small government if they have received an appropriation for something it doesn't matter if they don't need it you never herr them say thanks but we just don't need that. If every state run agency director was told to end the year with a surplus or be out our your backside next year, you would see a change and we would find our state in the "black" in one year I have no doubts of that.

Exactly. I remember when my youngest started school and this has been a while back her brother had his own "cubby" in kindergarten and 1st grade to put all of his supplies in you know that list you get so you can go to walmart with the other parents and buy up pencils crayons etc. When she started we had a list that included wipes and toilet paper hugely different than the boy started 4 years before and frankly it was a head scratcher. We go to the meet the teacher night at her school with this hefty bag of supplies and I ask where is her cubby? Oh well we dont do that anymore we just put it in this big pile and whoever needs what gets what they need..... I just stood blinking for a moment before it just washed all over me and I told her no we dont do that Im not teaching my daughter collectivism so she either has a cubby or we take this stuff home and dole out what she needs on a daily basis. The teacher was shocked and said but but Sir thats how its done now and I replied thats teaching the little ones communism from an early age and I prefer to teach mine that private property Her private property as I shook the bag of supplies belongs to her not in some collective pile that everyone according to thier needs gets to dig into whether they contributed or not. I said in a very loud voice that those that have parents that wont get their supplies for them have already been provided for by the government confiscation out of my weekly paycheck and the exorbidant property taxes that I paid on a yearly basis and that we were NOT going to actively participate in their soft indoctrination excercise. I looked around and some of the other parents were nodding and mumbling yeah us too. If I hadnt spoken up and I went to the PTA meeting and brought the issue up there as well, most people would have been shamed into blind adherence with ye olde herd mentality. How many people these days stand up to that type of progressive garbage? Too damned few in my humble opinion.
