When we were planting some farmland this spring we found a couple of Axe heads and a wedge. Not really all that uncommon we usually find one every couple of years, but I've decided to keep these for whatever reason.
The first settlers were on the property in the 1890s and most of the land had been cleared by the 1960s.
So here are a few pics:

I tried a sand blaster first then hit em with a brush on a bench grinder and oiled them. I had to beat most of the heavy scale off of the wedge with a chipping hammer!

Wow! And here I thought it was pretty cool when I tilled up an old pull top Budweiser can in the back yard last spring.

    You win the internetz today!

    Cool stuff for sure.

Now I'm kicking around the idea to sharpen them and rehandle them.

Anyone have ideas about how the steel might act after I shape and sharpen the edge with a file set?

Looking at the deterioration, if they were hardened at the edge only you may not have much hard material left especially on the more deteriorated head. If it was me, I'd try to find a protective coating and keep them in the shape they're in.

Also you might want to check blade forums or similar, there are groups of folks who restore old axe heads and you'd likely be able to find more experienced advice or at least a higher concentration of folks that have tried it.

Thanks, I figured I'd end up on a blade forum eventually I was hoping to get some crossover by chance here first, because I know how newbies can be treated on forums-ha ha!

More likely to get some response from facebook groups.. if you want.. friend me on there and I will link you to some axe groups.. and bushcraft guys love to restore them as well.. I am a member of several and like it was posted.. likely will not serve you well to rehang them for anything.. they are too far gone.

Thanks for the offer but I'm not on FB. I may look for a forum to join.
I don't split much wood, just enough pecan to feed my smoker. Usually 1/3 of a rick per year, I'll block it at 12" so it generally splits easily.
