I can't imagine a rifle chambered for 44 mag having very much recoil and would think this would probably be a really good youth gun. Actually thinking about an H&R single shot so the child could shoot through the muzzleloader and rifle seasons here in Louisiana. Any one have any experience with these?

Take a look at your ballistic tables. Energy from a .44 mag in a rifle matches .30/30 out to over 100 yards. Its gonna kick some.
Can you shoot .44 special in a single shot?

If they only made one with open sights. I've e-mailed Lipseys and H&R about this. I want one like the Buffalo Classic but in .44 instead of .45 Colt.

I have one with a 1.25 -4.5 scope on it I use for Primitive season. I run Hornady LeveRevolutions through it. It has a fair ammount of recoil, as the gun is not very heavy, but it is very managable. I would compare it to a 243 bolt gun. It is way better than the 45-70 in the same model. That is an ass-kicker.

It is also very accurate. I free-floated the forearm and put a vibration dampner on the forearm screw and the gun shoots < 2" at 100yds with the Leverevolution. It also had a pretty good out-the-box trigger at 4.5# and a smooth, clean break.

If it is comparable to a 243 bolt gun, then I think that's probably the route I'm gonna go. We won't be hunting anywhere where there will be a need for a shot over 50 yards or so. Trying to get the best bang per buck and I think this would probably be the ticket. I like the idea of a low power scope too. I have a 1-4x24 on my Marlin 30-30. Thanks for the replies, now I gotta go get it.

The Famous "Pink Tiger" world Champ, Aunt Sandy swears by her H&R 44 magnum with the Hornady round. When first brought to the Ft Polk range women and girls all wanted to shoot it with no problem. A lot had to with the fact it was a Bad Girl Gun, Pink with Black Tiger Stripes. It is accurate too you can see many photos of the rifle and instructions on how to make one. Kick...you have to be kidding, little 7 year old boys and girls shoot it all the time. They like to blow up water jugs. You can see all this at www.foremosthunting.com

As far as the 44 magnum well I killed 8 moose in Alaska with the pistol the rifle is a little better.

I knew the round would do the trick, the question was more about the recoil. 44mag definitely kicks too much for a young-un in a revolver of any design. Figured it would be a great deer gun for multiple season use in Louisiana. I'll definitely be looking into getting one some time soon. Probably will be my son's 8th birthday gift in November or his Christmas present.

I bought A 44 mag HR for my 10 daughter.I let her shoot 44 special in it to target shoot.During deer stand I put in 44 mag. loads.I hunt during primitive weapon season with it aswell. It is about like 243 with 44 mag.but with 44 special loads is less than 410.
    Good luck.

You can use .38 caliber and larger for primitive weapons hunting and .35 caliber and larger for Miss. primitive weapons season. So 38-55 and larger for Louisiana.
I just picked up an H&R Buffalo Classic in 45 colt from Bowie Outifitters today for the clearance price of 199.99. They had one left. It will take .45 ruger loads and more.
Some people are having them rechambered to 454 casull and 460 S&W.
I shoot 45 magnum loads in my Ruger and now in my 45 BC. They are pushing 250gr XTP bullets at 1350fps and are below max Hornady loads. The 45 will exceed 44 mag power with 25% less pressure.
If you get a .44 handirifle make sure its manufactured after 2007 as after that year the bore specs were tighter . The ones before that had sloppier chambers and bore sizes.
Lots of good reading about NEF firearms, etc. on Graybeard Outdoors forums.

Thanks guys for all the responses. I had forgotten all about this thread. Boys will be getting their first 22lr for Christmas this year and probably get the H&R 44mag around Easter time so they will have time to get familiar with it before next hunting season.

Can a .38/.357 single shot be used for primitive hunting?

    Thanks,

Makes me wonder if you had a stamped ".38 Special" rifle, would the LDWF Agent know it's really .357?

    Or maybe .380? :mamoru:

If somebody did that (.380) and got the **** slapped out of them by an annoyed enforcement agent, they'd deserve it!:rofl::rofl:

You can use a .357 or .38 in Mississippi. It has to be an actual .38 bore diameter or at least .375 as in the 38-55 cartridge (.377-.379). H&R isw making a run of 35 Remington rifles for Mississippi hunting along with the .35 Whelen.
