    Important items for knife training.

In the words of Gomez, “If a manufacture is not making a training knife to complement its live blade, they’re not serious.”

We like the Benchmade Griptilian and

For full on training (Is there any other kind?) we find that NOK trainers are very much appreciated by your training partner.

We learned about NOK trainers from Tom Sotis of the AMOK! system www.edgedweaponsolutions.com and have used them to great effect since. Please note, these trainers will leave a very nice bruise, but they do not penetrate or cut.

They are available from Edges2, Inc, http://trainingblades.com/ in two trainer sparring sets.

Also available from Edges2, Inc are numerous aluminum trainers. We own a couple of these, but since we’ve moved to the above folding trainers we use these less.

PPE – All of this is optional and never really appreciated until an incident.
Mouth protector, cup, football arm protectors and safety glasses.
We are currently using Wiley X SG-1 goggles and find them OK, but a bit pricey. We are still seeking to improve this and are looking at racquet ball glasses.
We do not use arm protectors in general, but in a two or more day training event they are greatly appreciated on day two or even the end of day one. With out them, unless you’ve engaged in some “body hardening”, you will not be able to continue to give and receive honest strikes.

Good post, Bill. I think we all started with the aluminum or wooden trainers back in the day, but as knife companies began to offer functional trainers everyone shifted to those. The NOK trainers are hands-down the best hard contact trainer on the market.

I've found the $10 racket ball goggles from Wal-Mart work pretty well for eye pro in dynamic sparring.
