    Hey guys,

First off, I love shooting, as I’m sure most of you do. Well one of my “have to’s” is to be able to shoot 1,000 yards one day. Now I know I’m not doing that any time this year or next, or maybe even 5, BUT I would like to start down that road.

I figure purchasing something that would get me to 600 yards first would be the smart thing to do.

Also, I shoot for fun. No competition, no hunting, just for the shear enjoyment of hitting a target.

So my first question, and I guess most important, AMMO. Which ammo would be able to get me to 600 yards, and be extremely cheap? (note, im NOT trying to have a 3” pattern either. Hell, 20” would be fine at that range) And then look into rifle’s?

Would a 300 win mag be a good choice to start? What do you guys recommend?

    Thanks,

Im sure Ritten or Barney88 will chime in, and give some better advice.

Here is mine. A 308 will do what you are asking, it has cheap match ammo so if you dont reload it wont break the pocket book. Plus, it has an extremely long barrel life. If you absolutely dont want a 308, then look at the 6.5 creedmoor, 260 remington, 243 winchester, 6 creedmoor. Those are all short action calibers that will take you where you want to go and beyond.

If you don't reload, .300 Win Mag will destroy your funds. 20 rounds of high quality ammo like Hornady Superformance will be $35.00 plus at a local store. Supposedly .300 Win Mag's barrel life isn't too great, but I haven't shot mine enough to know. If it helps you any I'm looking to get a .308 in the near future for 500-1000 yard shooting. If you get a decent rifle, optics, and a basic knowledge of ballistics/wind, 600 yard shots will be routine with a .300 I'm set up with a Remington 700 Police with Trijicon 5-20 accupoint.

If u go 308 and are looking to shoot 1k yards, I would definitely look for a barrel longer than 20 inches to keep the velocity up.
    I shoot a 26" at 600y.

Looking for cheap ammo, look into reloading. Match grade factory loads are not cheap for any cal and do not shoot like hand loads that are tailored to a rifle.

Don't skimp on glass and make sure it has enough internal elevation adjustment to get you where you need to be.

You've already got some good advice here. If you're just learning and take the advice of some of the great rifle shooters we have on this board, you can be shooting 1000yds in no time. Distance doesn't mean much as long as the round is capable and the target is big enough. I can teach a monkey with jock itch to hit a 10 moa target consistently at 1000yds with a .308win.

Pick up a Remington 700 tactical or a Savage 110 with a target barrel and put as much money as you possibly can aside for a scope/mount/rings. Come out next Saturday (a week from tomorrow) for the Field Precision Rifle match at Palo Alto and get some tips from the guys shooting 600yds. You can start off with match ammo (Federal Gold Medal Match or Black Hills Match) but eventually if you shoot a lot you may want to reload.

A good .223 will get you to 600 yards with no problems. It's all I shot in FTR since 2009. Mine has a 30" barrel and 1:6.5 twist.

If you decide to just go stock, the Savage FTR line shoot extremely well right out of the box. Comes in .308 and .223.

I shot out to 800 with the owner of Black Hills Ammo a few months ago. It was easy but he did all the hard work dialing in the scope. I don't really know the size of the steel we were hitting but I am guessing it was human torso size. I think I hit 9 out of 10 (on video to prove it). We put some out to 1000 but at that distance with .308 and gusty winds it was a crap shoot. I didn't hit anything at 1000. Every round was landing in a completely different spot but Jeff was consistently nailing them at 1000. We were shooting Colt rifles and Black Hills match .308.
