As a hospital Security Officer I am required to attend regular classes in Management Of Aggressive Behaviors or MOAB. Also, nurses in the ER and BHU units get to take this class.
Basically it's use of force policy and descalation verbal tactics with comealong and takedown holds if the verbal stuff fails.
Almost every night we are called upon to calm down aggitated patients or visitors. Many times we are force to intervene in altercations between employees. Often we have to escort people from the hospital property. Other times we have to prevent patients from "elopeing", or leaving, an area such as the Emergency Department or the Behavioral Health Unit.
So verbal tactics and hand to hand techniques are an important skillset.
This past Friday was my day to attend my MOAB Refresher class. I clocked out at 7am at the end of my shift and by 8am was sitting in class.
It wasn't long before the class got past the powerpoint part of things and moved into the hands on part.
We covered different joint locks and come alongs.
Here I am partnered up grabbing an arm.
    moabe.jpg

That's right. Don't make me snap your arm off and beat you with it.
    moabg.jpg

Then it was my turn to be the bad guy. OUCH! My Arm!!!
    moabb.jpg

We practiced takedowns. We are Going Down! We Are Going Down! Here I have my partner on the mat am getting some pointers from the instructor. Cross your Ankles. Don't make me tell you again. Cross your damn ankles. Oh, they are already crossed? My bad.

End of part one. Part Two shortly.

When I was a therapist at the Austin State Hospital, we certified in PMAB--Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behavior. We had takedowns, complaince and submission holds, various techniques to handle aggressive outbursts. It was always th emost fun part of annual recerts!

    Part two-
We also covered breaking from holds.
Don't grab me by the neck fron the front. I'm suppost to slam a fist to your face, knee you and stomp you while using the cadance LET ME GO with each move. In reality it will probably be more like DIE YOU F###ING SONOFA#####!!!!!.
    moabr.jpg

Don't grab me from behind because I get to lean forward, then come back up and drive my head into your face. Then I can swing back into your happy place until it's not so happy.
    moabs.jpg

Hey, our instructor fell down a flight of stairs at the hospital and broke her leg and she can still kick your butt with stuff from MOAB. We ain't playing.
    moabj.jpg

After it was all over I had passed the written exams and had proven I could walk someone out of a building or put them on the floor if necessary. I even got a peice of paper which says so.
    moabu.jpg

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed my little report. We had lots of fun in the class and I wanted to pass along some of that fun in my post.
Before you ask, No we did not cover beating someone with a Maglight. That's frowned upon. Not that it may not happen in a real life fight but it's not something MOAB condones. LOL.

You wouldn't want to break your maglight!

Mother of All Bombs is what I was thinking when I clicked on the link.

It reminds me of the epsiode of "King of the Hill" where Bobby Hill took the womens self defense class. Him screaming "I dont know you thats my purse" was one of the funniest things Ive seen.

Sounds like the same thing pretty much. Yep. It sure beats classes on report writing.

Not Oschner. I work for BR General. We have Code White but in over 2 years I've never heard it used.
    More pics from class.
My fellow Security Officer Herman getting some instruction.

Herman gets to take someone to the floor.

Then it's Hermans turn to taste the mat.

Another Security Officer is recertified. Good work, Herman.
