Just to update everyone. The load I settled for my son is a reduced recoil load, published by Barnes, with a 120g Barnes 120g TTSX bullet and IMR 4895. This is a sweet shooting low recoil round that I am using in my gun as well.

Sad news today. It seems that my son is flinching when shooting his 7mm-08 and is just all over the place at 50yds even with the reduced recoil loads I made for him. Today I let him shoot my AR .223 and he put 20 rounds in a 4 inch group at 50yds using just a cheap red dot. I am very much leaning towards putting together a 300 BLKOUT rig, either in an AR or single shot, for him to use next hunting season and save the 7mm until he has some more meat on his bones.

My 7yr old grand daughter bad wanted to kill a deer and all I had she could manage was a bull barrel 223 RRA.
Quality bullet in a 223 is enough. She shot a nice deer at about 75 yards with a good size exit hole. Dead right there - I was shocked! I am not a fan of 223 for deer - I have a 260 for the wife and daughter (I love it BTW!!) but if he is flinching, a well placed 223 is a lot better than a poor place 7mm bullet.

My son is 7 & has a Howa 7mm-08, recoil is a on-issue & he shoots gallon jugs of water @ 50 yards; but it is a little heavy for woods hunting.
    I picked up a 16" barrel M4 AR IN .223, he now prefers it & jump shot a spike @ 10 yards. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1425271178.891552.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1425271234.021631.jpg

My son and daughter both started with a single shot .243, but moved quickly to the 7mm-08. They could have easily skipped the .243, but I had it available. The bolt action 7mm-08 is a sweet shooting rifle with minimal recoil.
