Probably won't ever leave durin' one of the hurricanes.

Being in the BR area it makes no sense for me to bug out for a hurricane. Even the worst case of Gustave we just hunkered down and rode it out. Now you do have to be prepared for it. Food, water, shelter, medical, and defense all have to be thought out ahead of time.
In my case we were in pretty good shape. Wife had enough charcoal to cook a T-Rex. Generator was running to keep the beer cold. Broke out the extra artillery for the lunacy that always occurs during civil stife. All was good right up to the point the house was crushed by the big red oak in the back yard. Now I had nothing.
Once you've effectively been rendered homeless by a storm your thought processes change to how to prepare for the worst case. Temporary shelter. Still haven't figured out a good solution here. Food and water. MRE's and bottled water did the job and will again. Medical. The sewage system continued to work so I didn't have to go to plan B which was digging a hole to poo in covering it up with lime. I've had some medical first response training but I'm thinking about stepping it up. The ditch medicine course I saw here looks interesting. Have a kit at the ready.
We can argue all day and not come up with an answer for defense hardware. In my case I had a HD shotgun, various handguns, and an AR. However longguns were just too awkard to move around in a structure collapse. When you have to cover a threat outside the home a rifle is the weapon of choice. Inside the structure I still prefer the shotgun. A handgun should always be at your side.
One of the most interesting things in our neighborhood when we reviewed what went right and what went wrong in Gustave was networking. Simple thing of "who are your neighbors"? What can they bring to the table in a difficult time? One has access to serious machinery. Bobcats, front loaders and such. Who has chainsaws? Who does what for a living that can assist in the greater good. Who is going to be the leech who didn't prepare squat. Having these resources can make a bad situation tolerable.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know. Good point about the truck, too. I'll definitely need to make the decision to leave or stay well ahead of time. Making the trip all the way back to GA wouldn't be my first choice, but I don't have any family in this part of the country, and I don't know anyone well enough to impose on them during an emergency.

I can't bug out . As soon as the wind dies down enough to get out , we hit the streets and start trying to get lights back on .

First Things First
First things first!
Eat all the icecream can't save that in an ice chest!
Next have sex as much as you can before the storm just in case you have to move in with friends or worse relatives and may not get any for a while!
Last but not least don't worry be happy remember it's not what life deals you that determines the outcome it's our reaction to it that does!
Simple but effective; in my opinion anyway!

Just a hint FYI I have found that my bug out loadout plan can be implemented at any time and is more likely to be effective if practiced at least one a week. Also Albertson's has ice cream on sale to help with the food rationing part of my plan, the sex part is always free depending on your definition of free. Being maried and divorced 3 times I'm not sure I am qualified to give advice on relationships.
The important thing I believe is to have a plan and if your going to have a plan have one that is enjoyable while preparing for disater.
Please note the opinion's I have given are not to be taken lightly and you should check with your physician to make sure you are fit enough to enjoy ice cream and have sex in quantities you have never experienced before.
Should you engage in either of the two activities for more than 4 hours please call a friend to help you DO NO, I REPEAT DO NOT call a physician, your mother, wife or signifigant other, for doing so may cause dizziness, loss of use of some of your facalties and be seen as a BIG MISTAKE once you regain your composure.
You should not drink coffee or tea in excess while engaging in your plan so as to delute your activities.
Again a well thought out plan will assure your success.
Be, Safe and Enjoy
