Registry Errors, Win XP. Computer is dead in the water.
Was using AVG Free to delete some spyware and the computer froze/crashed in the final moments of the scan.
Now when I turn it on, and click the user profile, it logs on and then immediately logs off. As far as I know, that is indicative of a registry error.
I have a large amount on info I need from the hard-drive (including wife's school files, irreplaceable pictures of my son, etc.) or else I would do a format and new install.
I'm trying to get my hands on a copy of the Windows XP disk (can't find ours because of all the moving we've done recently).
I was hoping to do a repair install. Is there a better way to do this? I really know very little about computers. Just enough to get in trouble.

can you reboot in safe mode? reboot and hit F8 at startup and choose safemode. You might try last known good config first

Safe mode is a good call. Secondly, if you have an external hard drive that is the same format as your hard drive (IDE/SATA) you can open the external and use it to plug into another computer and recover data.
Lastly, if you ever have anything that is irreplaceable invest in some backup methods.

+1 homeslice on the backup methods. Those external hard drives are great. They are inexspensive, portable and worth there weight in gold if you have irreplacable data. You can also place all of your programs that you use the most on it and never have to worry about crappy computers.

All of these are excellent pieces of advice. Unfortunately safe mode is failing to initiate, and I'm getting a blue screen when i try it.
As far as backing up info, yes, I have learned my lesson. However, I still am desperate to get those pictures off of that hard drive for sure.

If you have the original CD, you can attempt to boot from it and run System Restore ... http://www.technical-assistance.co.u...ry-console.php
(There are several better links, but only have a second, at the moment. That one should give you an idea at least.)
Good luck!
Rusty
P.S. There are free video instructions -- which should answer your questions. (See Chapter 17 of the link below):

Is it XP home or pro? I could give you an XP pro CD, although I am kinda far away.
The best way, and the way I would do it. Boot to a linux live CD and copy all pictures to a flash drive or external hard drive. If this makes since to you, good. If not, it's kinda hard to walk someone through.
I do computer repair on the side, but I'm not much help to you over here in Baton Rouge.
