Arizona Pastor Arrested, Jailed for Holding Bible Study in Home; His Wife Says It ‘Defies Logic’

Bible study leader Michael Salman is sitting in jail today after his home was raided earlier this week by more than a dozen Phoenix, Ariz. police officers and city officials. His offense? The city says people aren’t allowed to hold private Bible studies on their own property.

Follow Fox News Insider on Twitter!

Salman was sentenced to 60 days in jail, three years probation and received a $12,180 fine for *the crime.* His wife Suzanne spoke with Fox and Friends this morning to express her shock and disbelief at the entire situation. According to Suzanne, the city told her that her husband was essentially arrested because the Bible study was at a private house .. and that essentially, it’s a church. Since they weren’t zoned for church, they were told they were breaking the rules.

If I read it correctly, he was allegedly violating zoning codes of turning a private residence into a church or something to that effect. I wonder if I had people over for a card game, would I then turn my home into a casino. Or if my friends were watching a movie, my home is now a theater?

I think we need more to the story.
    When she says:
'essentially arrested for' that says there's more to the story.

But by all means believe what a reporter says

You are absolutely right about. I was just focusing on the bottom line. Pastor + Bible study + Home = Arrest & Jail

So you think he was doing more than having a bible study? I would think if I want to read a bible in my own home, to whoever I have in my home I should be able to do that without having my home zoned as a church . If a muzzie stopped and started to pray in the street I would bet no one would mess with him .

Or if I have a beer in my home, should I zone it for a bar? What more of the story do you need Hunh?

The guy was in his own home, he should be able to read what he wants to who he wants, while drinking what ever he wants wearing whatever he wants.

I support zoning codes as they are important. But the punishment does seem harsh. However I am sure there is more to the story. I would'nt be surprised if the guy was making a habit of it and neihbors were complaining. If my one of my neighbors were doing that often I would call the cops too.

So if your neighbor routinely had people over to read a bible you would call the cops? Now if he was doing it on a bull horn in his front yard maybe. From what I gather they were having a get together reading and talking about their faith .

Although I have never seen a street preacher get arrested and they annoy the hell out of me. But I would not think about calling the police on them for preaching on a corner.

"Phoenix City Prosecutor Vicki Hill said in a statement: *It came down to zoning and proper permitting. Anytime you are holding a gathering of people continuously as he does, we ave concerns about people being able to exit the facility properly in case there is a fire, and that’s really allt his comes down to.*

This is about Government thinking they can protect us better than we can protect ourselves while trying to make a buck .

Many times church splits are started by bible Studies. Bible Study can be a wide ranging term for any kind of church meeting. Maybe had something to do with retribution from fellow church members.

Or like said, they could have been into some real nefarious **** like parading in the yard with snakes.

No doubt more to the story.

I don't want 20 cars parked at the house next to mine all Sunday for services. If I want to go to church I know where they are. I also don't want a slaughterhouse, whorehouse, bar or biker clubhouse next door

There is MORE to the story.

Essentially he was holding church at his home

This is the "more to the story." http://radio.foxnews.com/toddstarnes/top-stories/homeowner-jailed-for-hosting-bible-study.html

Christianity has been under attack for a while now. The indifference of "professing Christians" and the dark push towars unifying everyone is the cloak of which our own government has used to push out Jesus Christ as the Lord. Now, anyone can practice anything without problems unless you're a true Christian (with principle and morals based on the Bible). If you say anything against any religion you will get attacked. You profess the name of Jesus Christ as Lord, and live as unto Him, and you will be marked as an extremist, as well as hated.

Jesus said that times would "wax worse and worse," and that persecution will come.

    2 Timothy 3:1
This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.
    2 Timothy 4:3
    For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears;

    John 15:18
If the world hate you, ye know that it hated me before it hated you.
    John 15:19
If ye were of the world, the world would love his own: but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

    This.

    "Christianity under attack" is ********.

Stupid people break laws and don't care.

There's a reason we have zoning rules. It was a stupid person, and/or ******* that broke the law. You can't use Christianity as an excuse. Once your bible study reaches a certain size, you're having regularly scheduled church, and the area isn't zoned for that. You're doing harm to your neighbors. Rules are rules. He wasn't arrested for it being Christian - he was arrested for being a douche to the neighborhood.

Agreed. Seriously, if this was going on regularly, it it highly likely that people were having to park in my driveway/yard/whatever to go to this person's house, and I would call the cops, regardless of what the occasion was. I know that if I couldn't get in my car and leave my own home because some jackass is parked behind my car in my driveway, and they weren't a guest of my home, I'd be furious.

Well sometime you just have to suck up having 20 cars next to your house(IF there were even that many at his place).

Unless they are on your property or are blocking you in then ,its none of your business what goes on at someone elses home. Everything I read, nothing says they were treading on anyone else.

You dont have to go to his church . You say all Sunday , usually services last an hour. You act like its a big deal that 20 people gather at someones home every Sunday .

What if its just a friednly get together for Sunday lunch and while they eat they read and pray . Can we stop people from gathering to eat at other people homes because someone doesnt like the fact there are more cars than usual on that day ? Maybe we can get them for "having a restaurant" and they are not zoned for that. Yet all they are doing is eating with family and friends.

The way I understood the article was that the city had no problem with the church gathering, but it had to comply to fire code and other regulations.
I think there is more to the story. IF the guy was doing this on a regular basis, with a large number of people, then I think he had every intention of operating a "church", as defined by the law. Maybe the guy was simply trying to operate without having to deal with the hassle or costs of meeting the requirements for zoning and compliance. He did build a seperate 2000 sq ft building to hold "study classes". In which case, in my opinion, he is intentionally trying to bypass certain things by insisting his gatherings are something different in nature than they are. I'm a firm believer in freedom of religion, but I don't like when people abuse our fundamental rights in an effort to benefit themselves.

DONT GET ME WRONG! I'm not saying this was the case with this man. It's just my 'assumption' based on what I've read and my experience with human nature. Personally, My beliefs say that a church is any gathering of believers worshiping, whether 2 or 2,000, but that's just my belief.
