I went to Regions bank today to order some checks. The first part of the conversation consisted of the teller saying that she would have to ask me to remove my hat. I said "Excuse me, what did you just say?" She repeated that she would have to ask me to remove my hat. I said I will have to refuse. She said that she would have to ask me to leave the bank. I said "I'm leaving and my accounts, my money and everything else will be following me shortly." She apologized. I told her there was no need to apologize as it wasn't her fault but I would not be doing business there anymore.
I know, no threat to them but a whole load of satisfaction for me.

What??? That's crazy! I've spent the last 10 years working for a local bank.... I can't imagine implementing something so rediculous!! We allow customers to open carry AND wear hats! Lol

Pretty much the rule of thumb in a lot banks these days.

You can't even walk into NavyFed with sunglasses, hat or hoddie on.
Also there is a NO Cell Phone Use while in the building. Signs everywhere.

    etc, etc

The Bank wants a clear picture of your face on video for security reasons and I think most customers will understand and comply.

pretty sure my banks (whitney/hancock) all have a "no hats, sunglasses, or hoods" sign on the door. Don't think I've ever been asked to remove if I've forgotten, but I understand the reasoning behind it. If someone forged a check to my account I'd much rather them have to get a nice pretty picture taken when they go to cash it than see their cap and glasses.

We use to ask people to pull their hoodie down, or remove sunglasses, but never a ball cap. We even had a motorcyclist come in with his helmet still on and visor down. That was an interesting few moments.

I was always taught to remove my hat when I entered a building anyways. :dunno: I hope if felt good to take it out on a low level employee who has no say so over policies implemented by her employer.

You have a marine logo as your avatar, you should know that you are supposed to remove your cover when inside.
Really though, I think it is a stupid policy but it is for security. A lot of banks have signs on the door (almost all chain banks that I have used) saying not hats or sunglasses.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Headgear

    Headgear Etiquette said:
In the Western culture derived from Christian tradition, removing one's headgear is a sign of respect, making oneself more open, humble or vulnerable, much like bowing or kneeling. This is as if to say, "I acknowledge that you are more powerful than I am, I make myself vulnerable to show I pose no threat to you and respect you." Men's hats are removed in Church, and not removing them is usually frowned upon. Women, however, are required to wear a hat to cover the head in some churches based on 1 Corinthians 11:5.

In the Jewish tradition, the converse idea equally shows respect for the superior authority of God. Wearing a kippah or yarmulke means the wearer is acknowledging the vast gulf of power, wisdom, and authority that separates God from mankind. It is a sign of humility to wear a yarmulke. There is a common phrase that explains this, saying that "there's always something above you" if you're wearing a yarmulke, helping you remember you're human and God is infinite. A Talmudic quote speaks of a righteous man who would "not walk (six feet) with an uncovered head, the (spirit of God) is always above him". Jews also may wear a fur hat or a black hat with a brim.

In Islamic etiquette, wearing headgear is perfectly permissible while saying prayers at a mosque, see taqiyah (cap) for further information.[5]

In the military, there are specific rules about when and where to wear a hat (also known as a 'cover' in America). Hats are generally worn outdoors only, at sea as well as on land; however, personnel carrying firearms typically also wear their hats indoors. Removing one's hat is also a form of salute. Many schools also have this rule due to the fact that many younger men tend to wear baseball caps and this being in relations to gangs depending on the side in which the hat is worn.

As a guideline, a man should remove his hat to show respect for the dead, when a national anthem is played or in the presence of royalty, in a church or courtroom, and during other solemn occasions, when meeting someone, and indoors while in the presence of a lady (though there is no actual relationship to uncovered heads and any of those places and situations). A woman may continue wearing her hat, unless she is wearing what is considered a unisex hat, such as a baseball cap, when she should remove her hat as well. Women usually do not take off their hats in these situations because they may be carefully pinned to their hair but take off their hats only in their own homes.

Finally, the hat can be raised (briefly removed and replaced, with either hand), or "tipped" (touched or tilted forward) as a greeting.

    Is that bold portion accurate?

I think it's an over reaction on the OP. Most banks no longer allow hats, hoodies, sunglasses etc for security reasons.

I thought its common sense to remove a hat when indoors. (But common sense is not that common).

So I'm curious: what new bank did you open all your accounts with that allows customers to walk in wearing hats, sunglasses, hoodies etc, hindering the cameras from getting a good view of customers faces??

Big Brother is watching! If this does not bother you then cool. If it does, like it would me, I just take my business elsewhere. No scene, just go to another branch and close out my account. Just as they are entitled to ask me to remove it, I am entitled to close it. But hey, thats my opinion.

Definitely cannot blame the teller. Wouldn't you want the authorities to have a fighting chance of catching a perpetrator if you worked in an environment where money is constantly transacted? These policies are put in place to help so you should probably take your annoyances to another bank.
