We were watching the news last night when they played a video that contained the shooter firing his rifle. My wife paused it and remarked that it sounded like an AK. We backed it up several times and she was right. I though it might just be the echo off the buildings but it definitely had that familiar "ju-junct" sound. Since it is the same caliber and the actions are similar, the media may be right about it being an SKS.

I'm waiting to see the sks, was he using scope? aftermarket magazine(s)? stripper clips?

The video I saw looked like it was equipped with a scope and possibly an aftermarket mag, but the clip is not clear enough to say

5 dead, 7 wounded, using a piece of Chit SKS. His handgun was probably a Hi Point.

"Piece of chit sks"? I've got a few and they are all accurate, reliable and smooth shooting. Just goes to show you don't need a scary black rifle to commit these kinds of acts

I mean I won't win any long range competitions with one, but I won't call it a POS

SKS rifles are very reliable and accurate rifles IF YOU LEAVE THEM STOCK. But if what you said is true and he "Bubba'd it up" with an "NC Star" scope mount, some off brand cheaperthandirt.com, chinese "assault scope" and some Crapco removable mags, then I'm gonna have to side with EJAIII and echo his "Piece of chit" statement.

IMHO if you have the money to properly mount a scope on an SKS, then you're not even going to bother with an SKS. You will be moving on to a different platform with more features.

    YMMV

My bone stock Russian black bolt refurbished groups amazingly. I'd never call it a cheapo pos. My norinco in tapco stock with scope groups damn good at 75 yards. But.......I'd choose my ar over the sks for a self defense/combat sitiuation

Could have been a private sale rifle that he planned to drop and walk away from if needed. There's a lot of SKSs out there that aren't on the books.

They also seemed to hem him up around that SUV. I wonder if that was his exit and he was on his way out when they jumped him.

The AR is made to disable and the SKS is made to kill.
