In the classes I've taken I have seen similarities in the content but the big difference is the instructor. Even those with real world; military/LE experience, not every instructor has the right temperament and personality to effectively communicate and teach the information. I've been teaching...
Thanks for the comments. I am getting close to being comfortable selling them, I want to make sure my heat treats are right and that the knives will hold up to being used.
1/8" thick steel, around 6" in length. The DIY acetone/dry ice cryo treatment was amazingly fun. Working with D2 on the next set, still trying different styles and designs. Accidentally ordered different type of G10 handle material. Did not notice until I started sanding.
Previous attempts at folding where I drew out to a bar, notched and folded always resulted in scale in the weld. No matter how much I brushed and fluxed, some bit of crap would get stuck inside. On this one I forged the billet out to a bar; 1/2" thick - 2" wide - 12" long and then ground the...
First two knives using new gas forge, my first billet to come out clean without any scale or inclusions. 1095 and 15n20 forge welded, not sure how many layers I ended up with. Around 200 for first one, 90 for smaller second one.

Haven't found anything local, order online. I get 5160 from McMaster and everything else (O1, D2, S35-VN) from New Jersey Steel Baron. Shipping can suck, but I order a few pieces at a time.
I got used to the mandatory full serve gas traveling through New Jersey - was actually yelled at the first time for getting out of my truck. Between undergrad, grad school and working at a university for eight years, being surrounded by those to the far left of the political center is second...
A cheap infrared thermometer is a good tool to have. Most ovens are fairly inaccurate on the actual temperature, and the kydex pulls best at specific temps. I've also tried some different types of foam, some tends to be softer than others. I use the stiffer stuff on knives, softer on holsters.
Applying for a job in Portland, checking to see if anyone has lived/ spent time there and has any opinions on the city, outlying towns. I spent three years in Massachusetts for school, so I am quite at home feeling out of place.
Actual iron or will steel work? Our metal shop is in the Engineering building and students come in all the time looking for iron scraps for projects and are let down when I tell then its all steel.. something about the magnetic properties.
Working with a small torch it will be difficult to get...
Finished my belt grinder. Had been using a 2x48 with a few minor changes. Decided to built a dedicated 2x72 machine with interchangeable wheels/platen, borrowing a few design ideas from the internet.
Still have some tweaking to do on the grinder; tool rests to fab and get the...
