Here is my carry ammo for my pocket 38 revolvers. "best" is subjective but I avoid the +p ammo for the small 5 shot revolvers.

148 gr. HBWC Target ammo .
I can shoot it accurately and fast .
I discovered that in a gun fight ...only hits count .

Shoot what you can hit with best .

My standard all around 38 "plinking but would still work on an SD situation" is a 158gr coated cast semi wadcutter with 3.5gr of tighgrouo behind it. Comfortable to shoot, cheap to load, and the hard cast will penetrate whatever if it came down to using these for SD.

There have been several ballistic tests performed in YouTube videos where hollow points failed to expand from 2" revolvers. The hard cast LSWC made a wide hole in the gelatin and a deeper wound channel.
Underwood makes a hard cast .38 special 148gr LSWC that clocks over 920fps from a 2" revolver. It can be ordered from www.Natchezss.com or even by phone at 1 800 251 7839

I don’t know if any of y’all clicked the link I posted above, but there was a lot of testing and development put into that round. “It’s maximized for the 1 7/8 barrel snubbie to give max velocity and penetration while minimizing recoil” per their website. The reviews out there on the internet are very favorable and this may be the ticket for 1 7/8 barrel guns.

With that being said, a j frame type .38 fills a very specific role for me (back up gun) and I’m sure this round will do exactly what I would need it to do in that role.

    Here are two reviews:
