View Full Version : Todd's adventures

March 20th, 2011, 03:27 PM

Today was my second EAPS match. I have never shot any kind of comp in my life before this. Nothing but cans. Also the first Glock Ive ever shot or owned. A G17
I'm not a good sight and shoot shooter. I am a very good instinctive shooter though. I need to practice using the sights

The first match I just didn't want to get DQ'd. I didn't. But I did need to unlearn muzzle up for safety. I got many warnings. I also had quite a few Mikes.
Score: U Production Minor N N N N 91.0668 15.47%

I friggin loved doing this.

I didn't clean my gun since the last time. I know, I know, I actually forgot.
Today was Fawsome. My goal was no Mikes and no DQ. I got very few Mikes.
Score: U Production Minor N N N N 130.7876 24.45%

I spanked the Texas Star, except, I learned that its not enough to hear the bulled hit the steel. You need to make sure it falls before you move on. The last shot on it rang. I was so excited that it didn't eat my lunch that I was thinking about my next movements and didn't "see" that the plate didn't fall. Crap. Its ok though because it wont happen again.

All in all I think I could be very good at this. Like Benji says "Its like golf with guns !"

I put a new red fiber sight on and managed to practice just a little. Dont think Im going to dig the front sight. We'll know this time tomorrow. Im going to get Dave or Benj to take some vids so I can post a couple up. Very insightful to watch them

And I painted some Zombies on my slide to scare the targets

So after reflecting on my sad performance Ive decided I need to spend time on drills and dry fire. Thats my goal for the next month. 30min every day, 6 days a week

October 16th, 2011, 01:46 PM
Well, I failed at the above mentioned practice schedule. lol

I skipped July and Aug. just far too hot for me. I did break down and buy a CR Speed belt and mag holders. I bought six on Spankys recommendation. Also on his advice I bought a new holster. I'd wanted one for some time and it was money well spent. I'll try and find the brand later.
I also joined USPSA so the qualifier that I shot today will count.

So today was my day for malfunction drills. Lots of them. I had a couple hundred mystery reloads that I decided to use. I knew the risks and I paid the price. To be honest, I was kinda hoping I would have some issues so I'd get the practice as the Gator Classic is next weekend and there's going to be lots of pressure.

Im still shooting a bone stock 1st or 2nd gen G17. I have had zero issues with this gun since I got it and have only cleaned it 3 or 4 times in 1500 rounds. Very happy with the weapon.

I was having some issues with my inability to use my sights, I couldnt pick up the red fiber front. I ended up blacking out the stock rear blade and widened the notch a little. Awesome fix for me. Seems to have worked well.
Scooters advice about practicing is not lost on me either. I just need to do it.

Very cool Todd. At least you keep going back. I sucked and never went back. I did better the one time I went to the outlaw IDPA match in Hammond. I try and practice over at Baker range on the weekends or when I am off.

October 16th, 2011, 08:05 PM
the day I miss due to work and he shoots better at the qualifier.. I coulda used the practice myself for gator but I am going..

October 23rd, 2011, 08:53 PM
So I have shot 700+ rnds since Friday. It didnt help. :wtc: well, maybe a little.

First day sucked. In the middle of the second round the fiber rod on my front sight flew off AND I had 3 ammo failures.
GMShooter saved my day and installed a new GREEN sight tube on my gun. This is important. I could now SEE my front sight every time, instead of having too search for it.
As for the ammo, I'm not sure what happened. Never happened again. hmmm

Second day. Only one mike on the first stage. How stoked am I.
Remember that sight that I can now see ? Well, it also showed me that I have a nasty habit of turning my gun to the left when I pull the trigger. Makes it very hard to hit the plate racks.

More as I think of it .....................

October 27th, 2011, 06:37 PM
I tend to do things my way. Sometimes thats good, sometimes, not so much. When all the fish go left to right, I want to see if I can go right to left.

I don't shoot too fast so these courses make me think about ways to work around that. I had a couple at the Gator that worked real well and one (on #10) that didn't at all.

No matter what Wyatt Earp can do in a movie, I can NOT shoot squatted, off hand, under a no shoot. Even if I have 6 mags. lol

Here are a couple of vids from EAPS today. I really need to work on my trigger pull and my grip. I tried a couple different ones today and didn't care for them.

January 15th, 2012, 06:52 PM
So were closing in on 1 year and I suck.
I've got my gun where I like it, sights I can see without any issue. Ammo I love. I suck.

I shoot low left or left, 6-8" consistently. Its in my grip/trigger pull and I don't know how to correct it. Doesn't do any good to practice dry fires when apparently I'm just re enforcing whatever bad habit I seem to have.
I do it when shooting from a rest even

January 15th, 2012, 06:58 PM
Its your grip Bro.

March 12th, 2012, 06:46 AM
Im not even sure where to start.
I took a training class this past weekend with Max Michel and Blake Miguez. Couple of important things first.
I have never paid for training of any kind. I never saw the value in it and was very worried that I'd be severely disappointed. I wasn't. Couple of things happen when people are teaching a class. The bottom people hog the majority of the instructors time and the middle and top feel like the got the short end of the stick or, the bottom is given the basics and told to follow along as best the can. None of these thing happened in this class.

I was the bottom rung in the class and because there were two instructors, I was blessed to have Blake spend a LOT of time talking in my ear. He and Max listened when I told them what I needed out of the class. I was honest about my short coming's and that made it so they could address my grip and trigger manipulation from the start.

(Hey benj, it was my grip bro !)

The class was honestly geared to address ALL levels of shooters.

In the end it was Max and Blake that got the short end of the stick. There's is no way to put a value on the info I got from them. I'm a new shooter because of them.

March 12th, 2012, 02:31 PM
I told you you would get much from this class.I hope I got funds for the next one.

April 15th, 2012, 05:16 PM
So today was my second match since my class with Max and Blake. I had an AWESOME day shooting.
Yes, I had mikes and a no shoot or two but I shot well. Very well for me. I have not been shooting since the last match but I have been dry firing a few times a week. I believe it makes a difference.
One of the things I got from the class is strong hand pressure should be light in comparison to your off hand. I have always gorilla gripped my pistol. Being conscious of it has improved my shooting

May 20th, 2012, 03:36 PM
So once again, I had a great day of shooting. I had two mikes and two No Shoot for the whole day. You have no idea how important that is and I hit all my steel with zero drama. Not one shot went left/low left. Not one.

While I still need improvement I can't express verbally what a better shooter my training with Max and Blake has made me.

October 28th, 2012, 06:45 PM
I placed 3rd in Production "D" at the Area 4 Gator match today. I can't begin to tell you the level of awesomeness that brings me. I've never won anything shooting. It's a great feeling. Did I tell you how awesome it is for me ?
As always, great group of people. Hats off to all that make it happen. It's not an easy thing to do. We were on squad 10 and had 7 people place from our squad. Pretty impressive.

Funny how much time I spend thinking, But, if I'd have done this or not done that, I'd have placed even better. lol

October 28th, 2012, 06:54 PM
I missed it all together this year (wiping the tear)

October 28th, 2012, 06:59 PM
I see the next new thing. T customs bug spray lube. Congrats.

October 28th, 2012, 07:02 PM
Competitive shooter are the best people you can spend a weekend with. Do I want to win? Damn right I do, but being with and making new friends make it well worth the time if I don't place (which I didn't).
Awesome job, Todd. You will only get better and enjoy it more each and every time!

October 28th, 2012, 08:24 PM
great job todd!!!!

Haven't been here in a while. Shooting has been great. Production D class but I have missed most of the classifiers and swapped over to limited for the local matches. No reason in particular. However,

I got a bug in my bag and decided to build an Open Glock. Why ? Because I wanted to see if I could.

I CAN !!!!! It took me a while to figure it out but I did.

I didn't ask too many questions because I wanted to figure it out on my own. I did a lot of reading on BE for loads and asked here I believe
but that was it. None of it helped me much because of the trigger I'm using. In the end I called the company that loads for team Glock. Bent
their ear for a little bit and off I went.

Gen 3 used Glock, raised the grip behind the trigger guard and an aggressive stippling. Milled the slide and built a comp for it. I had a Lone Wolf barrel. Trigger is something I put together. I had a McGlock trigger in it at one point though and I loved it. I had the slide milled for a
JPoint. The Dot is not much higher than the factory sights.
It cycles factory ammo even with the comp. (Im very stoked about that) And handles my Major load real well.

135G Alpha Bullets on top of 7.0g of Auto comp with Fed. SRP
