    Which tire is that?
And that black soot on your fender is not pretty. Don't take this as beating you up as I know as well as anybody how challenging a carb can be.
But I guess maybe I am beating you up:exnbp:

    Metzeler Karoo 3. Its a 60 durt/40 skreet tire.

I agree on the soot. I have after market exhaust and air intake box mods i also drilled the slide on the carb.

The KLR is a known oil burner.bad...the 08 especially which is what I have. Maybe that has something to do with it?

Im sure I could probably mess with the mix a bit more but I went with the mfg recommendation on jets when I did my carb kit and slide modification. It runs well and is much more responsive now.

I've heard good things about the Karoo 3.
I have some some questions about your bike if you care to share.
Does it burn oil and if yes how much?
Will it start and run without using the choke? If yes it is too rich.
Are you familiar with ADVrider? There is a wealth of information in a KLR only thread. It only has 35,747 posts and 1788 pages.
It's challenging using the search engine but with enough time invested one can gather some very useful info from the thread
My Buddy had the same year with the oil consumption issue. A big bore kit took care of that.
I find the recommendation with aftermarket jet kits unreliable. The wacky thing is jet diameter varies with each manufacturer. I only use jets from a carb manufacturer. Mikunis get Mikuni jets and Keihen gets Keihen jets.
    JetsRUs is a great source.

I would say it burns about .25 of a quart. I top it off as needed between oil changes and I try to change oil about every 2000ish miles. Seems to like Rotella conventional.

It will start without choke but the second I twist the throttle it will die. I usually engage the choke for about 30 seconds and its just fine after that.

A big bore kit is on the list for sure along with the wattman thermobob being done at the same time. Im just not sure what size kit I want to go with just yet as there are a few options.

I went with Eagle Mikes KLX jet kit and a pilot jet #42. Being thats its from a KLX it should be factory Mikuni parts but who knows....I spoke with him on the phone and he was pretty helpful. I mentioned drilling the slide and I told him I was in New Orleans and below sea level and I went with his recommendation.
    See details in link.

One thing about Das Ficker that is nice, is that it burns no oil! It also has a built in oil level overflow indicator... The airbox... Overfill it just a hair and it will fill up that airbox!

That looks like a lot of fun. Great pics.
Three weeks ago I joined the Lake Hills Motorsports TAT ride. The guesstimate was 75 riders showed up. They located in Corinth MS. Apparently they have been doing this for years. They have a nice collection of old bikes on display. My hats off to them.
The two day ride started in Corinth then across Pickwick Damn with our destination being Parsons, TN. Almost two hundred miles of mostly improved dirt roads. Nothing technical just twisting roads with lots of dust. Most of this section of the TAT is not scenic but is you like spirited riding on on gravel it's tons of fun.
Day two shorter with a little more pavement but again with the lightly traveled winding roads it was fun.
FWIW don't look down on the Dreams. They have traveled more of the TAT than 99% of us have. Just old guys having fun.

Did you ride with Bob's group? I was with Louis's group. Wish I would have met you. Lets make it point to introduce ourselves next year.
Did you find the gravel/sand mix a slippery as I did? It did keep things exciting.
    I was on a Frankensteined Suzuki DR650.

Last month I rode 700 miles on my XT250 in the Ozarks, but had to return early for Cristobal's arrival.

Leaving tomorrow with my bike and M101A2 military trailer camper for 2 weeks in NW WY and the CO Rockies.

Yes, I was riding with both Bob's. I think the extra weight of the Twin kept it planted in the looser sections. I did not get to ride the second day. Battery went bad on me. I think it broke a plate in it when I dropped the bike at the go around through the woods at the road construction site. Once I got it jumped off Sunday morning I made a straight shot to the truck.

We will definitely have to meet one day, if we haven't already met at some point in the past.

Dayum I had to buy a battery in Parsons. I think the trailering up there shook mine to death. Luckily I carry a small jump pack. After installing the 790 big bore kit there is no more bump starting it with human power.

I had a small lithium jump pack as well. It wasn't big enough to overcome the short in the battery and would not power up with the battery disconnected. Disappointed with it. May try a different brand.

I’ve got a KTM790 and a 450l, haven’t done any long ride/camping, but try to take one with me when I go out of town on runs, went to Lima Oh Wed and stopped in Robbinsville NC on my way back, rode the dragon again and a bunch of FS roads.

I need to get a long haul bike again... I may do what I said I wouldn't do and get a 1150GS again.. You simply cannot beat the value right now... All the other bikes are too damn expensive...
