I was looking into this recently but I'm not really sure where to start. Are there any groups around Denham Springs where I could learn more?

The entry level license is Technician. Basically, if you understand Ohms Law, the regulations of Amateur Radio, and some safety rules for like climbing towers, you can pass Technician. As of right now we are not running classes for Tech but we've just restarted classes for General which is the next higher-level license. (Thanks Covid)

In absence of Tech classes I suggest self-study using the ARRL Technician Study Guide. Search Amazon for "arrl technician class license manual". Free practice tests are available at QRZ.com. While waiting for your study guide to come in, come visit the Baton Rouge Amateur Radio Club (BRARC) at our monthly meeting July 26. More info at http://brarc.org/. We'll hook you up.

Testing is done by radio amateurs vetted by one of the Volunteer Examinator Coordinator's vetted by the FCC. As a Volunteer Examiner I suggest studying for General in tandem with Tech. There is about a 60% overlap in the subject matter between the Tech and General question pool. Pretty much if you get a consistent 85% in the practice tests for Tech, start studying for General. When you get a consistent 85% on General, take both tests. Our next test session is September 3. http://brarc.org/get-license/license-exams/ Plenty of time to study and make that exam. I'll be there.

Do you have a particular area you have interest in? Emergency backup comms. Serving NGOs such as the Red Cross. Chasing the number of countries you can contact. BSing on the local repeaters. Making contacts through the number of amateur satellites we have up there in low earth orbit. Whatcha into?
