I have three CR500s, one of them is an '84 air cooled version I plan on making street legal. Not to actually ride it on the street, but what a dirt road rocket that will make. I love open class two strokes, my favorite (and the last one I'd ever part with) being an '83 Maico 490 SandSpider. My next restoration project is going to be an '82 Husqvarna 430 WC (that one already has a street title out of Arizona).

I would like to build a RC500. I'd take a 1980 CR 250, replace the motor with a 1983 CR480 engine. DG swing arm, Fox shocks, with the 1983 CR480 forks. One day, when I' done with all the must do's I 'll get to the wanna do's!

Here's where I'm at currently with my air cooled CR500. It's a ground up restoration project.

Truth be told, I'm planning on selling it when I'm done. My '85 CR500 is for sale, too.

It's a lot of work keeping the old bikes up and running. I can't walk in my garage, spare parts everywhere. The '83 Maico is a perfect fit for me, as is the Honda 650R. I'm just going to stock parts for those two. I need to de-clutter.

The CR500s are a blast, though...

Yea I had a 83 CR480 in 83, and two 85 CR500 in 85. Boy those were the days! These days a weedeater gives me armpump! LOL. :mamoru:

Are the XR 250 and 650 the only two XR's still made? I think the XR400 would be perfect for me but it looks like the stopped making them around 2004?

I had an XR400 back in 2003 and I loved it. I wanted to make it streel legal but lacked the money and time to do so. One thing I've noticed is that dual sport bikes don't do either one very well. But if you just hafta have one then check out the Suzuki Super Motards. They are a street legal version of the motocross bike, but tuned down and geared properly for street. KTM also makes a great dual sport as well but I have no personal experience with them, only what I've heard from other owners. At 6'5" you will get disappointed with a 250 real quick. Good luck with your choice.

I took two drz a 250 and 400 get a street kit with the lights and horn put some mirrors on it and get it inspected at a sheriff office and then go to the dmv and get a tag.

Bumping a old thread, anyone know about a bike that is registered insured and street legal in Texas where its supposed to be easy to be street legal, to Louisiana where dmv is saying its a off road only title. It does not say off road anywhere on the Texas title. Thanks for any help

Wow that was an old thread. I do not know of any in Texas, but the dual sport bike is becoming a little more popular. I went from pure dirt bikes to dual sport 3 years ago. Had a Yamaha XT250 and now have a Suzuki DR-Z400S. I ride the streets and the woods 50/50. I am not on facebook, but met some guys up at Forrest Hill last month that all were in the woods with their street bikes and they told me about their fb page Dual Sport Riders of South LA. They are actually having a camp and group ride at Forrest hill on May 8th and May 9th. I will not be there b/c Mothers day weekend.

I think an off road only vehicle may be made with parts that are not DOT approved and does not have all the required safety equipment.
