I decided it was time to begin buying parts in the wake of the Sandy Hook incident. It's nothing fancy, as I wanted to avoid building a "tacti-cool" shelf queen and assemble a "lightweight", simple gun. I'm frequently at the local firing range [literally two blocks from my house] and visit the 100m rifle range on occasion. I built my gun to punch paper and to "cut my teeth" before obtaining a Noveske or a DD for my SHTF/go-to gun.

The first step was finding the only available lower receiver anywhere online, a billet piece[1] from Reno Guns [U.S. Firearms Academy] and waited three months for it to be delivered. I assembled the lower with a CMMG trigger group and a LPK from Palmetto State Armory [2]. I then bought a new Colt 14.5" barrel [3] and had an extended flash hider permanently attatched. I then obtained an upper receiver [4], Magpul MOE handguard/stock kit with Milspec buffer tube and UPK from Spike's Tactical. Lastly, I sourced a BCG and charging handle to complete the rifle. The only thing I didn't do myself was torque the barrel to the upper receiver. A buddy of mine had the tools and he handled that for me while I was working seven days a week.

I'll take some better pictures soon.

    Future plans:

1] replace rear ARMS flip sight with Lewis Machine & Tool, tactical rear sight

2] install single point sling mount

3] replace Magpul handguard with a 12" free float rail [still researching this]

4] to coincide with the FFR, I'll either A] buy a low-pro gas block or B] cut my FSB down

5] duracoat [once handguard is swapped]

looks like a winner. I like to keep an AR simple. Unless youre building it for a purpose (clone, tac driving, maximum tacticool)

Where did you get the barrel from?

I bought the barrel off of eBay from http://kcbstacticalchaos.com/main.sc

I initially built it as a plinker but now I'm looking to get involved in some training courses to better learn how to use my rifle.

Very nice build. I just did number 3 and 4 on your list this weekend and am very happy with the results. Replaced an MOE Handguard with a 12" Midwest Ind SS Gen 2 rail. Huge improvement in comfort for me.

Thank you! I'm still learning the "do's and don't do's" assosiated with ARs. Ironically enough, that's the exact FFR I'm eyeballing.. Do you have any pictures to share?

Outstanding... Thanks for sharing!! I need to put some time in shooting for accuracy so I can compare once I change it out. I suspect my rifle will be more accurate than I am right now ha

on a side note, that's a damn nice range you have there :)

Since your flash hider is permanantly attached, your gas block options are few. Cutting down your FSB may be best. Other than that, you'll have to cut it off and install a two-piece clamp-on style block. I have a Bushmaster Spector on one of my rifles and it has given no issues

Built mime much like you sourced parts here and there, managed to dress it up with everything for a good all around carbine for 630, even installed the barrel myself, it's a bushmaster 11.5 with 5.5 pinned flashhider, no way I can free float the barrel as I can't get the barrel nut off the barrel, the fab won't go over the flashider, buts a it's a super hbar should be pretty accurate... but she is fun to shoot

Good point. Speaking of the flash hider, it is indeed pinned but you can still see it. I'm not sure if it's "enough" in the eyes of the BATF.. I'll take a detailed picture later tonite after work. I won't blast the shop who I paid to affix said flash hider or the fact that they didn't properly torque the barrel Some gunsmith... Jim's Gun's tightened me up [no pun intended] and now it's g2g.

Yep. I'd be very tempted to go with the Troy just for the easier install, plus you don't have to cut the block down as much. I got a great deal on the MI on ebay that I couldn't pass it up. Plus I like the way the rail looks a little better.

The Troy Alpha (not the TRX) clamps on to the standard barrel nut. The MI SS Gen 2 requires you to remove the factory barrel nut and install their proprietery barrel nut. Not difficult but you'll need to buy or borrow a few tools and remove the flash hider, gas block, delta ring, etc.
