So I figured I would run with it. He (or she, sorry I don't know Vermiform that well) first suggested the series titled "299 Days", by Glen Tate. I've heard of this book about two months ago, but just didn't get a chance to order it yet. The story line sounds pretty interesting.

Here's a quick blurb from the official book site:

The 299 Days series, published by Prepper Press and written by Glen Tate, is a ten-book novel about the collapse of the United States. In it, the main character, Grant Matson, has a job that allows him to see what’s wrong with government. He realizes he needs to prepare for what’s coming and he does so. His wife, Lisa, is reluctant to prepare because she thinks things are just fine. When the civil unrest and political collapse hit in a dramatic way, it is undeniable that they need to leave their Olympia, Washington home and head to their cabin. But, Lisa is still reluctant; she desperately wants things to remain *normal.*

I'm currently reading "Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse", by James Wesley, Rawles (apparently the author likes the comma between his middle and last name. From www.thedailybeast.com: The internal comma is intentional; according to Rawles, an admitted *student of common law,* it’s what he calls a minor affection that distinguishes between his first names, which belong to him, and his family, which *owns* the surname.

So there you go. Two books to get you started off with if you haven't read them yet. What would you recommend for others to read? What you you recommend not wasting time reading?

    The Patriot series is fantastic.

Here's another very good book about an EMP attack-

"One Second After" by William R. Forstchen

I'm reading it now and so far it's pretty good.

    From Wikipedia:
One Second After is a 2009 fiction novel by American writer William R. Forstchen. The novel deals with an unexpected electromagnetic pulse attack on the United States as it affects the people living in and around the small American town of Black Mountain, North Carolina.

The author released the book with no digital rights

Lights Out- very good e-book (I think they printed it now) about an EMP attack and how a subdivision comes together to survive.

Under a Graveyard Sky (John Ringo) First of a trilogy. A lighthearted look at a zombie attack. It ends up taking a nautical setting which I really liked. Another twist is that the main zombie killer is a 13 year old girl... I'm looking forward to the next book.

The Last Centurion (John Ringo) Much different than above. A colonel in a military supply depot gets cut off in Iraq with just a few troops when a flu epidemic kills off a large portion of the world population. How to survive when you have limited manpower but virtually unlimited equipment! A very different writing style for Ringo. Not lighthearted!

Obviously Lights Out and One Second After - These go without saying.

World War Z - If you have seen the movie, it is completely different from the book.

299 Days - Excellent and highly addictive series written by a real Washington insider that writes under a pen name to protect his identity.

Going Home Trilogy - Very good series, though I'm kinda disappointed with book 3 which I am reading now.

Enemies Foreign and Domestic - Awesome trilogy by Matthew Bracken

Renewal - This little gem that I found is a 10 part series done in novella form. Can be found on Amazon for $1 each. Very well written. Can't recommend it enough!

The Road - Well, very dark. They made a movie about it and the movie was so depressing I couldn't finish it in one sitting. It took me 3 in fact. The book is worse. It really makes you question whether you really want to survive certain SHTF events in the first place. Masterfully written but OH SO GRIM...you've been warned.

I did not enjoy Patriots. Not sure why but it could be because I read so much better books that those before I got around to Patriots and then it just couldn't compete. I don't care much for the author either. I read a ton of post apoc fiction and I really enjoy the genre. I am obsessive about my fiction though and little things like timelines, firearm mistakes, and poor editing kill most books for me.

Glad you started the thread. Was about to myself and saw that you took my advice.

For the record, I am a male (or I was the last time I checked) though I am becoming more and more domesticated as I get older. :biglaugh:

I'd add the zombie survival guide (Also by Max Brooks) to this list.

Read World War Z and didn't really care for it that much. Never read the Zombie Survival Guide.

While not exactly "prepper" reading, the following zombie-related books I really liked:

Tooth and Nail by Craig DiLouie
The Remaining series by DJ Molles
The Arisen series by Glynn James and Michael Stephen Fuchs

If I think of anymore later I'll add them to this post

ETA: The Enemies Trilogy by Matthew Bracken is pretty good...again, it's more of a "social collapse" kind of book than a prepper book.
