Dear Friend,
I am not making this up. It is not an April Fool's joke.
The top legislative leaders in Congress -- Reid, Boehner, McConnell, and Hoyer -- are now "engaged in high level confidential talks about exempting lawmakers and Capitol Hill aides from the insurance exchanges they are mandated to join as part of President Obama's health care overhaul" according to Politico.com.
Apparently, "aides and lawmakers in both parties fear that staffers -- especially low-paid junior aides -- could be hit with thousands of dollars in new health care cars, prompting them to seek jobs elsewhere. Older, more senior aides could also retire to jump to the private sector rather than face a big financial penalty."
Too damn bad! Politico reports that "lawmakers -- especially those with long careers in public service and smaller bank accounts -- are also concerned about the hit to their own wallets."
Each party understands that it would be suicidal to pass the exemption on its own, so they are working together to do so in tandem so the American people have no one to blame. A source (anonymous of course) told Politico "everyone has to hold hands on this and jump or nothing is going to get done."
Staff members of Congress are also usually given federal subsidies to help to repay their student loans, a privilege those of us in the private sector who work for a living don't get.
