So the crazy overtime is ending sooner than I planned it to and I won't have the down payment I wanted for the 'Stang. Looking now at getting an F-150. Just wondering if the change to the 6-speed is worth getting an 09 or newer, how the 5.0 compares to the 5.4, and if there's anything else I should know. I've got a 99 that I've been driving for 11 years and have spent less than $500 on repairs, hoping to have the same luck again.

The 5.0 is more powerful, and probably fewer issues with relation to busting the heads as the 5.4 Triton. I had an 02 with 5.4, it had no problems, other than needing the front shocks replaced due to cupped tires. It was left parked (was brand new, had it about a month) while I was deployed, and the person who was supposed to be driving it around the parking lot every week didn't do it.

I miss that truck, but I'd not hesitate to get the new 5.0 over it. I drove my nephews and fell in immediate lust with it.

    I had an '11 5.0 SC 4X4.
No troubles and got great gas mileage, lots of power up high in the rpm band. What it did not like was towing a 6k# camper at highway speeds, short of cruising around in 3rd.

Bought a '14 ecoboost CC 4X4 and it tows alot better, how ever makes slightly less mpg.

So I take it the 6-speed has been reliable?

I was considering the ecoboost and will probably drive one, but for mostly driving around unloaded, I'll go with the sexier noise.

I've never owned a 4x4, but thinking about getting one. Does it have any noticeable effect on anything when not in use?

I have an 11 SC 4x4 with the 5.0. No issues whatsoever except when i get to the gas station. That 36 gallon tank is a beast! I regularly tow an 8000# boat with mine and have never had any issues from Lafayette to Cypremort Point or Cocodrie and back. I wanted to test drive the ecoboost but they wouldn't let me tow a boat down the highway with it. That and they wanted $1500 more for it

I have a '13 FX4 with ecoboost with the 3.73 RE. I love my truck and have been a chevy guy all of my life before this one. Ecoboost has a ton or torque and is very quick. I put 33's on my 20" rims and didn't see much if any decrease in mileage. I have had it about a year with no issues to date and would buy again.

I have a 2012 Supercrew with the 5.0 and have had no major problems up to now, which is around 31K. Only problem I had was I had to have the drivers side door speaker replaced. Mechanically, no issues at all. Tires holding up extremely well showing no alignment problems at all, which I am very happy about considering I came from a 2000 Superduty and a 96 F-150 before that that ate tires up. Like mentioned above, when towing it sucks gas pretty good dropping the mpg to 15-16. I have some 3.31 gears and I tow a 6000 lb boat and trailer set up and it will drink fuel especially in a headwind. Great highway mileage though-around 21 mpg if strictly driving on the interstate. My average regular driving around for work and errands gives me 17-18 mpg. I work with guys who have the Ecoboost and they love theirs and to my knowledge have not had any problems either..

I have a 2010 f150 Lariat 4x4. I love everything, except the 5.4 is a turd. My companies 5.0 feels like it has much more pickup. I towed my camper (7,500 dry weight), it didn't do too bad. If I were to get another gas, it'd probably be another f150, but I plan on going diesel.

I traded an 05 f150 with 5.4 for a 2014 with the 5.0. Way more power and looks way better. The gas mileage sucks!! I average 12.5 even with a 30 minute ride on the interstate twice day. I love the truck though, very comfortable and spacious. I got the fx4 package. heated/cooled leather seats. bluetooth audio etc. Plenty capable offroad, I took it out to the moab this summer but just stayed away from jeep trails. IMAG1016.jpg

Just sadly got rid of my 2013 Lariat super crew 4x4 on Saturday. With the 5.0 I was getting 17mpg, towing a small trailer with a Polaris Ranger would get around 14mpg. Only downside to the 5.0 I could find, it takes 8 quarts synthetic motor oil. Makes services pricey.

I drove an '11 SC ecoboost for 70K miles. i Loved that truck. wife hated how big it was. I live in the city, so it made some things less than optimal due to size. I love the ecoboost motors, so now I drive an explorer sport.

before i put 35s on the f-150, i could get 20-22mpg unloaded. ( it was a 4x4). with 35s, i was getting about 16-17. The ecoboost trucks tow like a dream. The downshifting mechanism when towing down hill is pretty awesome.

Very comfortable ride, very smooth on the power and the shifting. The 5.0L smokes the 5.4L hands down, not just in Hp/Tq numbers, but in towing, MPGs, etc. I get an average (driving to Houma from the Lafayette area, then back for crew change, then around town during my week off) of about 17.8mpg according to the readout. Strictly driving to/from Houma, I'm in the 19.5-20mpg, and on our last trip to visit family in TN we averaged 21mpg for the strictly interstate driving. Towing a buddy's truck from Houma to Bunkie, I averaged 15.5mpg pulling it on a dolly. When I "need" to get on it, it gets up and moves.

However, you're talking about affording a Stang, I hope you're looking at either a used F150 or a lower end model, because my FX4's sticker price is $20K higher than a nicely equipped Mustang GT.

I have a 2008 FX4 w/ the 5.4 and love it. I tow between 3000 to 5000 lbs and get a little of 11 mpg on average; highway 18 mpg; and 13 to 15 around town. Love my truck but you will get better mileage with the 5.0 or ecoboost.

How are yall getting that kinda gas mileage?? I'm easy on the pedal and still only get 12.5 out of my 5.0 and I'm lucky to get 14 on the highway. It only has 33's and an exhaust

Yeah, definitely used. The Mustangs I was hoping for were also used in the $25-$30k range, I'm looking for an F-150 in the $17-$20k range. The thing is, if I were getting a Mustang, I wanted to get what I really wanted, track pack and all that. On a truck, I'm more willing to settle as long as I get 5.4 or 5.0.
