Can someone advise me if there are laws requiring smoke detectors in homes, specifically with rentals. If you have a single family home, not a new build, and are renting it without smoke detectors, what would be the penalty? I haven't found anything online yet but I'll keep looking and hope to have some knowledge provided to me on here!

No, there aren't. Not in Louisiana at least.

Louisiana adopted the NFPA as a law for commercial buildings only.

If it's a multi use apartment complex then, yes, NFPA applies but single houses and duplexes don't fall into that.

If the unit is being used for any federally-funded housing assistance programs (Section 8), it must have smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher to pass the program requirements.
