    LAKE CHARLES, La. -
Louisiana State Police are investigating a shooting near Lake Charles that left a trooper shot in the head.

According to Troop D Public Information Officer Sgt. James Anderson, the trooper was responding to a vehicle in a ditch on LA Hwy 14 near Fruge Road in Calcasieu Parish. State Police say the incident was related to a suspected impaired driver.

State Police say the suspect was quickly detained by passing motorists as additional citizens rendered aid to the trooper until assistance arrived on the scene.

According to KATC, the trooper was taken to a hospital in Lake Chalres and is listed in critical condition.

Further information and the Trooper’s identity and status will be forthcoming as the investigation continues.

The LSP Facebook page posted this message Sunday afternoon"

"The entire LSP family is requesting your thoughts and prayers following the shooting of a Louisiana State Police Trooper in the Lake Charles area," it reads. "Please take a moment from your Sunday afternoon to send prayers and well wishes to the Trooper and his family in this critical time."

Glad to see that people helped instead of just taking pictures.

    Update:
Col. Michael Edmonson, head of Louisiana state police, says the trooper who was shot in the head on Sunday is a 13-year veteran who has a 9-year-old son.

He says 43-year-old Master Trooper Steven Vincent is from a law enforcement family — one brother is also a state trooper and another is a town police chief.

He says 54-year-old Kevin Daigle of Lake Charles was arrested. He says charges against Daigle will include attempted murder of a police officer.

I pray the trooper makes it through this ordeal and recovers quickly. Also hope his family can cope and hold it together.

Strange how some LA parishes wanted to remove "in God we Trust" from the back of patrol vehicles. Yet post on their website to pray.... I say it's on the dollar bill, leave it on the car. Hate all this politically correct BS.

I don't know if anyone reads nola.com, but man is there some hateful posts on this officer in the comments section. A man is fighting for his life and someone had the nerve to say "he deserved it" WTF? This Anti-police hatred needs to stop.

Just read that Trooper Vincent has died from his injuries...

    As posted by KPLC news:
From State Police:" I am very saddened to report that Senior Steven Vincent has passed away this morning from the gunshot wounds he suffered yesterday in conjunction with a traffic investigation. As an organization, we are heartbroken over this senseless and tragic death. Our thoughts and prayers are with his surviving wife Katherine and his son Ethan as well as his entire extended family. ( Brothers, Tpr. Terrell Vincent and Chief Keith Vincent) Steven was proud to serve as a Louisiana State Trooper and we were proud to count him among our ranks. This loss exacts an enormous emotional toll on the State Police family, but we will do what is necessary and proper to honor Steve and support those who knew and loved him. He will be missed but never forgotten. Prayers."Colonel Michael D. Edmonson.

That's the part that kills me. Now this boy has no dad because some selfish POS didn't want to own up to his mistake. Now he turns a DUI into a life sentence. I hope some prisoner with an ounce of integrity shanks this MFer with a plastic spoon.

Terrible for the family- but just can't help but feel especially bad for the little boy. No child deserves that.

I hope this POS gets what's coming to him.

That ******* needs to fall down more stairs until he looks sorry for what he did.

Farewell ST Vincent. You will not be forgotten.
