Don't know if you were going for a particular era, but other than the flash hider, that looks just like what I had at Benning in '85. I remember then, looking at it and thinking, "what a pos.."...but it still shot.
And the slings were black then.

I distressed mine with the following technique...

    1. 100 grain sandpaper on most common wear spots.
    2. 150 grain sandpaper over whole thing
    3. Steel wool over worn areas
    4. Stainless steel sponge or scrub pad over worn areas.

Repeated steel wool and stainless scrubber every night for about a month. Very lightly... take your time, you don't need to rush it.

The stainless pad will buff every point and take any hard edges off.

That just goes to show that the Army always got new things to play with and the Marines had to suffer budget cuts. LOL! The M16A1 I carried in Okinawan wasn't even a Colt. It was made by Hydramatic (General Motors)

    Just have to comment.
I was at Benning in '85 as well (Harmony Church.)

    Wonder if we met...

And yeah, I used the same Vietnam era M16s they provided us with.
Went bang every time even though it looked like it should have been retired long ago.

    Those were the days.

That is one nice looking rifle. I too am currently working slowly and I mean slowly on a Vietnam era build... mine just has more parts. :D Engine and trans are done. Now on to the body. I'm sure someone here will recognize what it's out of.

I was at Sand Hill. The platoon I was with that had a bunch from La went to H Church. I was separated from them the first day or so we got to Benning during onboarding, or whatever they called it.

Sidetrack- Well that didn't take long. Nice ride B. Looks Army a1 except for the rear tie-downs. Take a look at hoosierhotshot.com if you haven't done so yet.

Back to topic- Only carried and own the a2 rifle but an early style one has always been on my todo list as well.
