I agree, it should be noted that Ho Chi Mihn first contacted the US about raking over Vietnam, but that we turned him down because we would be upsetting our NATO Ally France which we really needed in Europe. Ho then contacted China and Russia, he was not really communist, he just wanted control of his own country.
Ever wonder what happened after we left veitnam? Well they went to war with Cambodia to kill Pol Pot and also went to war with China.
Over the last few decades life has greatly improved IN Vietnam. A good friend of mine who fought there has since married a Vietnamese woman and last year went back to meet her family. He was in some of the same area he served in and stated that the people were very nice, and that while it is technically a communist country they are not very communist, in fact they are very capitalistic, and that they enjoy a lot of freedoms that we do, but not so much on Freedom of speech, arms, etc.
THe fact of the matter is that we need friends against China and Vietnam has shown that they are not afraid to stand up to CHina.

Really? Do you think it's better to keep relationships with Vietnam hostile or closed? What has it gained us since the war was over?
Offsetting China's power/influence in the region is a good start. There will likely be Economic development opportunities that are advantageous to both countries.
