Gretna Gun Works: A little bit of good, a lot of bad.
Let me preface this by saying that the entire staff has always been friendly, but aside from Ryan, the other employees are useless. Ryan seems to be the only one authorized or knowledgeable enough to do literally anything in the store. The other employees call on him even when he is clearly doing 8 other tasks. I have no idea what the deal with that is, but they would be literally helpless without him. He seems to always be helping 3 people and also answering the phone while the others stand around.

Anyway, I went in last February to purchase a suppressor from them via the SilencerCo LE/MIL program. They had the Octane 45K in stock that I wanted. I purchased it right there, gave them my info/filled appropriate paperwork, and left it with them to mail. Wanting to be thorough, I called back a week later to ensure it was mailed. I was told that they did their mailings in a batch, and they hadn’t done a batch yet. No big deal. But then a week later the same thing. Finally three weeks later I was told the batch had been mailed. Nothing like adding on 3 weeks to an already long process.
Time passes, and eventually its mid-August. I think to myself that its been over 6 months, and I should have heard from them long before. So I call them up to check to see if my paperwork has come back. They tell me “Oh yeah, it just came in!” Great, Im going to go pick it up. I show up, grab my can, and head home.

First thing I see once I get it home, the date approval on the stamp is stamped July 2. It was mid-August. There is no way it took 6 weeks to get from the ATF to their mailbox. I ask around, and no one has ever seen it take 6 weeks between a stamped approval and the paperwork showing up at the FFL. Most say it takes no more than 2 weeks. So most likely they sat on my stamp for about a month without notifying me it was there and ready. So I’m annoying that I didn’t have my can much sooner, but now comes the real mess up: I go to log the can into my Trust, and notice that the serial number on my can and the serial number on my tax stamp are different! My paperwork says “Model- Octane 45K” then Serial number: OSP45K-5678” but the serial number on the can is “OCT45K-1234”. They messed up the serial number when they submitted my paperwork to the ATF, and (at the time) I was in possession of a suppressor without a tax stamp. I immediately call them and they say to come in, so I head down there right away. I have to hand my can over to them while they figure out what happened. They should have checked the serial number before I even left the store, and they ESPECIALLY should have verified it before submitting my paperwork to the ATF! They screwed this up big time.

The next day I get a call from the owner, Brian. He tells me that yes, he screwed up my paperwork, and my can is no longer “mine”. He tells me that he will check with the ATF what can be done, if they can just cancel the old stamp and issue a new one with the proper serial number. I say ok, leave, and begin to investigate on my own. Well after a bit I get a hold of someone at the ATF who tells me that I just need to mail in a copy of my old stamp with the new info, and they can cancel it and re-issue. I call GGW and tell them this, and they tell me that all they have heard is that we need to refile (didn’t seem like they had put much research into it, honestly). That isn’t a viable option for me since at this point 41p has passed, and I have a Trust (not going to bother with fingerprinting and all for others in Trust). So I mail my paperwork like the ATF agent said, and about a month later I finally get a call from GGW asking me to come down to the shop. When I get there, Brian tells me that the ATF reach out to them after getting my paperwork, and wont cancel and re-issue. Now this is not the fault of GGW of course, but the fact that I had to act on my won to get this info straight from the horses mouth with no real effort from GGW is what made it way worse. Brian tells me that I have to get my old stamp cancelled and refile for the tax stamp with the appropriate serial number. Now its 9 months down the drain, and another 8+ month wait ahead (if that was the route I had chosen).

In summation, here is the good: As payback for this debacle, Brian offered me any gun I wanted at cost (did not take advantage of this as I asked for pricing on a few, and realized I could get them cheaper elsewhere) and he also offered to pay for my tax stamp when/if I refile. He was extremely apologetic for messing up the paperwork, and was willing to try to make it right, Ill give him that. But the waste of time and screwup were just too much. So I decided to return the can to them for a refund.

Now to the final screwup: In “payment” for the frustration I asked them to pin/weld a muzzle device to an upper for me. They attached the muzzle device allright. And in the process scratch up my barrel pretty good and put a big ding into it as well. Here is the damage they did to my upper:

Dang , that's not good. I've been using Mike over at mej services for my Nfa items for probably over 5 years. Always a good experience and very knowledgeable. Just not a "stocking" dealer.

As far as gun smithing, I don't know where to recommend. I do most of my own work.

Though this mistake shouldn't of ever happen, and more care should have been given to the gun smithing, I will say, the younger guys at ggw have been extremely nice to me on everyone of my visits. And they are stocking some nice items like I saw a dan Wesson in 9mm there that was just beautiful.

    - Reply from the owner of Gretna Gun Works -

I am going to first start off by saying; I also hope this thread remains in place. I feel it is extremely important for these conversations to remain, as the only form of character representation that I can project, from my shop, to the public.

As this is the only response that will be written from me on the issue, I will not chase down all of the issues that Gretna Gun Works has done in the past. As you can imagine, we are one of the oldest gun stores and gunsmiths in Lousiana (1948), so this thread will give plenty of room for people to pile on about GGW. We purchased the shop 2 ½ years ago, but go ahead and speak freely, it obviously precedes your right to carry.

First and foremost, I will start with my overly impressive staff. We have a great store manager in Ryan from product knowledge to education. We have an extremely talented gunsmith in Nicholas, which if you only got the opportunity to watch what he does, it is masterful. I have another gunsmith that has been working on guns for 30+ years and specializes in revolvers and older pistols. Additionally, to speed up service, I have another salesman dedicated to the customer experience, as well as, a retired Navy Sailor in sales that spent the last 15 years in SOCOM doing his thing. It is the thing that makes me most proud of my shop and their overall knowledge humbles me. We truly are the *holy trinity* of a gun store (new/used guns, gunsmithing, and a range), and we wouldn’t be anything without our talented staff. Obviously the word is out considering the amount of resumes’ we receive monthly, some from people at other shops and the Colorado Gunsmith School. Our storied history is not in focus, but one that goes back to calls from Mr. Roy Weatherby on gunsmithing issues.

I will elaborate on the mistake from GGW (from a business perspective and an emotional perspective) on this initial thread, but only from a point of reasonableness. It obviously struck a chord, as I normally could care less about what people write on the internet:

When initially filing the form 4, I crossed lines from my A&D book in filling out the Serial number section. The form was filed, months later, it received a stamp. The only reason the form got a stamp, was at that exact moment, GGW still had in its possession the Serial number for the typo’ed can. Otherwise, it would have been immediately flagged. As a result of GGW owning, in its possession, the incorrect Serial number on his form…… the stamp was approved! As a side note, and unfortunately in this instance, the ATF could care less about what the rest of the information says (caliber, overall length, name of product, etc), they 100% rely on Serial number. So even though I wrote the correct information pertaining to the item, the serial number was still wrong. Upon arriving the can was transferred and I will not reply on timing. DWD did notice the mistake and called us to inform. He also promptly returned the can and I immediately called the ATF. Since he isn’t an FFL dealer, I will now write for all to read what they said to me. They said on day 1, this issue cannot be fixed and a refilling (now under 41F) will need to be submitted. Form 4 fixing needs to occur PRIOR to the stamp being approved, and before approval, just about anything can be fixed. However, AFTER a stamp is given, AND ONLY AFTER, a complete cancellation is required. This news was given to him on day 1. He informed me, that he could call someone at the ATF to fix. Separately, the ATF was telling me he cannot fix it. I reluctantly agreed to let him proceed, but figured it was the least I could do and what harm would it impose. There was never, in my opinion or that of the ATF, any further fixing from that point on. After many weeks, an ATF specialist, who deals with Stamps and incorrect serial numbers called my cell phone. She gave me two options: 1) he can keep the serial number (different can) on his form and I can correct the form in the system for that can or 2) he can re-file under 41F (as an individual or trust) if he wants a different serial number. She also asked me to never let another person pursue the matter on the condition she runs this department. "Period, end of story" from her mouth to my ears. This only occurs when the stamp has been issued, not prior to approval. That the business side.

On an emotional side, you can imagine the pain of having to admit numbers were crossed and it is your fault. If I could have fixed the problem, all means necessary would have been applied and they were. I offered cost on anything in the shop or special order; fix anything he wanted gunsmithing on or a combination of the two. Additionally, I offered upon resubmission to pay the $200 tax stamp, as his $200 will be refunded when the stamp gets cancelled. I, in taking full responsibility, could only offer one or all of those options as reconciliation for my screw up. An offer, I felt any reasonable person would appreciate. This solution would have ended up adding additional wait time (9 Months), on a can he would owned for the rest of his life!! I didn’t think twice about $30 the shop made as a SPEC dealer on the can, the *zero profit* cost on a new gun or the service I would have eaten. It all wasn’t as issue, as I wanted a resolution that makes our customers happy, appreciate our honesty and know we 100% will back the work we do. So you can imagine the sting of offering up many give-a-ways, for what ultimately ends up being additional time delay. That is the damage done when you get down to it…..a time delay.

I cannot comment about the marks on the upper, as I don’t know if it is from aluminum residue off the press or a scratched finish.

Again, I plan to never comment on this issue again, and know there are many great shops besides GGW working hard to make money, employ great people, and provide a great service. All of which I hope this never happens to. Nonetheless, I am sure many other shops are willing to sell non-SPEC items, not pay your $200 stamp and have you wait the same amount of time to get the new can.

    Best….

Being a small business owner, I can tell you this, **** happens. It's never a good feeling for the business owner when **** happens to a customer, business owners fault or not. But it's the price of doing business sometimes that **** happens, and a good business owner will first try to rectify the issue, then try to compensate for the issue, then when they've done what they can they simply have to move on. Customers can point out what happened, and they may feel justified in placing blame on the business. But at the end of the day, **** will always happen, and if it consumes you it's ultimately your own fault. We all have **** happen in our lives, and unless it happens because of malevolent intent, it's usually best to just do what you can to resolve it, then let it go. Otherwise, at a certain point, all you are doing is bitching.

all I can say is im waiting on 3 cans right now from mid april, and I did everything I could do to 100% make sure it was right on my end, even having my wife and a few friends double check my papers, but mostly because my best interest is at hand, and I know mistakes happen, all the time for that matter, BUT, this is a very serious process that could end up in very serious consequences for having a suppressor not registered to you, maybe im wrong, but I feel there is NO WAY a form should have even been sent of without having the papers check, double checked, triple checked, then checked by a diff person who doesn't even have a hand in the process just for verify numbers, then also there is NO WAY a suppressor should have never left the sellers hand without verifying proper serial numbers on all papers and can, then should have to go over it with the customer, example.... " ok john, here we go, your papers say XXXXXX and here is your suppressor, we double checked and im gonna read the numbers to you they are XXXXXX, does that match up, NO it doesn't, ok lets figure this out"
but on the personal side, I have a lot of money tied up in stamps and trust and cans, and if I get a call in a few weeks saying " oh we submitted the papers with wrong # on them" im sorry but I would honestly go "APE SH*T" after waiting 8 months with over $3000 invested, I would be an "untamed gorilla", and I am assuming suppressor refunds and tax stamp refunds would help a lot, but I guess when you get you mind on something and wait 8 months and do a lot of leg work making sure when you get your cans in you have all your equipment ready for cans, thread barrels, buy new suppressor host, accessories, ect. like telling you there is no Santa clause before Christmas

Errors happen, some errors are acceptable and some errors are not acceptable.

When dealing with the federal government, the amount of time and money envolved makes this error unacceptable.

Sorry about your problems -- I hate to see that sort of thing. Sad.

I do most of my own gun smithing, but have used St. Bernard Indoor Shooting Center for some things that I did not feel comfortable doing and very satisfied with them. Great place for supplies and to shoot as well.
