There are quite a few smiths in LA, one in Broussard was on the show forged in fire.

Will ask retired ABS master smith Kermit Laurent tomorrow when I talk to him.

What type of classes are you looking for, so I can ask tomorrow.

Forging blades or just stock removal, damascus, mosaic damascus, mokume, etc.

I hope Spanky doesn't mind me jumping in His thread from time to time.
I'd be interested in almost any class. As a hobbyist I may have some bad habits that I don't even know about. What's the line used to beat noobs over the head with, "find a competent trainer" , "seek professional instruction" , "a class will be some of the best money spent" I feel those all apply here.

I emailed a local smith Darrin Sanders in Pollock, LA on different subject. Said he hasn't held any classes, but has been thinking about it.

Sorry, I meant starting from a blank. A friend's husband had a class in Gatlinburg so she was looking to get him into another one a bit closer.

Just got of the phone with Darrin Sanders, and said he would be willing to hold classes.

You would have to contact him for pricing, as it would be tailored to each individual persons needs. Prices would include everything for making the knives, steel, pin, handle material, belts, abrasives, ect.

The class would include cutting the design out of steel, grinding to profile, heat treating and tempering, to putting on and shaping handles and finishing, ect.

He doesn't teach forging, but him and other smiths from LA, AR, and TX host a hammer-in in shreveport every year. Anyone can go and watch or sign up for hands on learning forging and whichever other class they will hold.

He is moderator on http://knifedogs.com/forum.php forum.

Thank you for doing the legwork on this. I've read over the ABS list for La a couple times before but without websites I didn't feel comfortable cold calling these gentlemen. The class and hammer in info are much appreciated.
