You can build something a lot better than any off the shelf rifle for about $1,500
If you lack the tools to do it yourself, there are plenty of people here that could help
You could also have one built to your specs from a local gunsmith

I have an Armalite, the real AR10, and it hasnt missed a beat. Shelf price of mine was 1600.

Only downfall of mine is it uses Armalite box mags only. They sell other versions that accept Pmags as well.

I run a POF-308, I like it. 20 inch, fluted barrel, adjustable gas, and ambi controls. I think you can get it in your range on gunbroker.

if you have the time to wait and look, you may find a used AR10T (the older ones from 2000-2004 came from Armalite with SS Lothar Walther match barrels and a nice trigger, ) or a Christiansen arms AR10.

I have a 16" CMMG 308, and I just considered selling it for a similarly priced Ruger SR762. Not that there's anything wrong with my CMMG at all, just that I would've preferred the piston.

I would skip any of the ar based 308 options that do not take the sr25 pattern mags (magpul, etc)... Mag cost matters, and if you plan to have a rifle you need to have a good collection of mags, and it is also a good idea to have plenty of buying choices. I have a few armalites ar10s that take armalite mags, and a handful of ar10 builds that take sr25 mags.
