Deer sausage on the hoof!! My buddy has one and that's what he called it--Thumper.
Stay away from shoulder or pelvic girdle shots and it won't destroy as much meat.
He used Leverevolution ammo and danged if they wouldn't run but left a foot wide blood trail and they didn't go further than 50 yards.

Gotta love them big bore lever guns!!!! 99.9% of the time if I'm hunting in the south in swamps, I got a big bore with me, always very minimal tracking if any at all.. I deff don't feel like tracking a deer or hog in a swamp with hip boots on lol.. that's a nice .444, I have often thought about getting a .444 but with reloading 44mag and 45-70 I just figured no need to get into another caliber, but I hear they are a "deer grenade" if you hit em' they aint going far lol, nice find buddy
I've never been a fan of polymer tipped bullets

Very nice gun, I wish you luck with it! I got a newer 1895 45/70 in a trade last year, with an XS mount and a Leupold Scout Scope it is a very handy woods gun, a surprisingly nice shooter, and I guarantee it will put meat in the freezer.

The 444 is a great round. Its recoil is comfortable and you can eat right up to the hole as long as u don't hit heavy bone. If u hit heavy bone then you have to do some trimming.

The superfoemance is not the same as the gummy tip bullet. It will be a 265 flat tip and will work fine. I reload the same bullet for mine and it works great

Ok. There is something about that hornady factory round that does not work with the older
Guns. Google it. Its a common thing evidenty.
I understand its not a gummy. But the round or speed or twist or weight is off.
