I won't go into detail, but I have fired a LOUD gun indoors, and the sound and ringing in my ears wasn't noticed until 10-15 mins later when the adrenaline wore off.

I wouldn't make that my primary focus. To me it's not harming family members while trying to protect them.

Flash is more of an issue than sound.

Of course this is just all my personal opinion.

I will echo your statement of not going into details or the lack there of ...but let me just say that a Keltec RDB with a Omega on it is very quiet in a hallway with 55gr XM193.

I have loaded mags of xm193. Given that's what I practice with, that's what I will shoot with. But my AR is not my home defense gun. My FN tactical is, 16 rounds of .45 plus and extra mag makes for 31. I also have a dozen glocks I can use. I don't feel as though I would need a rifle, but there's always one near by if I do.
