I don't own a conventional deer rifle. Sold the last one in the early '90s when I started collecting mil-surps. The 2 sporters were bought for around $100 each, I didn't Bubba them.

I have hunted with my 1942 German 8mm Mauser and that one will stop them in their tracks, when my son was in high school that was the only one that he used.

I took a hog at around 40 yards with an M91 Nagant. Looking back now I probably should have let it walk out before taking the shot. It tore the Hell out of the shoulders.

When I was younger I used my father’s 1903o3 30/06 for a while. In the late 60’s when I turned 18 I bought my first mil, surplus 98K Mauser in 88mm. like my father always said, if its good enough to kill men with its good enough to hunt with. Now don’t get me wrong he had many civilian type hunting rifles, now mine. I’ve just added to them. except I like military type weapons. AR10A2 Carbine and Rifles clones in 308 / 7.62x51 and AR15’s Carbines and Rifles in 223 / 5.56.
I’ve killed many deer with Mauser, AR10A2 Carbine and AR15A2 carbines

Yeah, a German 88mm should be a one-shot kill with the right placement!!

There is a show on A&E or Discovery Life Below Zero
there a {Eskimo} lady named Hailstone she hunts with 91/30 with Iron sights. I am always amazed at how well she shoots with it. That lady can take down stuff most can not with a modern scoped rifle. Her Husband {the white guy} hunts with primitive weapons as he is a felon.
He is not show on this season as he is locked up on parole violations.
He kids {they only show the girls teens and older} are great shots as well
Note} only gave a race, so you would know who they are. As they show them fishing and trapping more. They truly live off the land. Unlike many of the shows on TV

Aah, the old 303. I used to live a stone's throw from Etobicoke where these guns were made. 303 was a pretty common hunting round in that part of the world; certainly more common than the .280 Ross that I've only managed to scrounge three rounds for.

My dad had a .303 Enfield I used hunting when I was growing up. That was a great rifle. He sold it at a gun show. Still wish I had bought it off him before he sold it.

When I was a kid we lived in Alberta. .303 British was one of the more popular elk cartridges up there. It'll certainly work fine for deer. .303 British, as well as 7.62x 54R is between .30/30 and .30/06 or .308. Actually 7.62 x 39R isn't far off from .30/30 and would be fine for deer.

I was talking with an older hunter the other day. When he was young all he had was a .30 carbine and brought home several deer with it at close range. Not my first choice.... but more powerful than many handguns used for hunting.
