Well the ole bee man finally made it out to the woods this week to see what the squirrels were up to and also scout for some deer signs. I went twice and the first trip I saw 9 squirrels and killed two and on the second trip I saw two and killed one. I hunt with my 10/22 and it’s kind of tuff this early in the season to get good shots. Of those nine I saw the first day I only shot at 3. I should have killed the 3 rd one as it was the easiest shot of the day but I just plain missed. The squirrel was sunning itself in the top of a oak tree and never saw me. I lined the cross hairs on him and let it fly and I was expecting to see it fall and it just laughed and ran away. The second hunt this week was poor to say the least. The squirrels just weren’t moving today. It was a beautiful day for sure but something was off a bit. I did have 5 deer walk up on me. It was a doe we have been seeing for the last three years. She produces 2 babies every year and this year was no different. Are you ready for me to get to the bandits yet ??? Well it was right at 7 am when I shot my first squirrel and I saw where it landed so I just let it stay there so I wouldn’t reveal my spot. A few minutes after I shot the squirrel I was scanning the trees when I heard something walking my way. I knew it was a small critter but didn’t know what kind. In about another 10 seconds a raccoon comes from my left and walks right up to my squirrel I just killed and starts eating it. It actually picked up the squirrel and was chewing on it. When I saw this I was like hell no, and put a hollow point through its ear and the raccoon drops in its tracks. As I’m just getting back to looking at the tree tops I hear some more noise and what do you know another one comes on the same track and goes directly for the squirrel. The 10/22 rises from my lap and * bam* the bullet finds its mark and bandit number two is laying right next to the first one. As I settle back into hunting mode and scan the trees for a few seconds I see movement to my left and here is another bigger coon making a bee line ( see what I did there ) to the dead bandits. Before I can react she has the squirrel in her paws and is tearing at the hide to get to the meat. It’s like deja vu all over again so I pick my rifle up and in one fluid motion line the cross hairs up and add her to the other bandits who tempted fate one too many times. Has anyone ever seen this while squirrel hunting ? I know it sounds far fetched but it happened. I usually let the critters go free, but I worked hard for that squirrel so they had to go. I did clean them ( what a pain in the @$$) and gave them to someone my wife works with. They were so happy and were even happier that I had cleaned them. Oh and to top it off I was stopped by two game wardens who saw me walking out of the woods today. They were good guys but definitely were by the book and yes, I had my license

What do you do with the squirrels?

And what do the people do with racoons?

I kept the squirrels also. The one squirrel was not messed up, as I didn’t let them chew on it very long. Raccoons can be cooked multiple ways (stewed or grilled on the pit )and are usually paired up with sweet potatoes, especially in the fall. I’ll have to get my wife to find out how they were cooked.

That is true 2 raccoon and 2 opossum bag limit per day except during open trapping season? I had to look it up, I never knew there was a limit on coons?

I always enjoy a good labeeman story, thanks for sharing.

If you're thinking about eating the coons make sure the glands under their front legs are removed - if not, the meat will taste like....

Dang, I appreciate the information. I was under the impression that there was no limit. If I need bail money, could some of you please list some good bail bondsmen. If you can,
head out to the woods this week as the weather is perfect.

Many years ago I had that happen while duck hunting. Well, only one raccoon though. Shot a nice mallard in the marsh and after a short time I went to retrieve my duck right at the edge of the pond and a huge raccoon is picking up my duck and trying to escape. Shot it on the spot.
Put the coon in the boat and on the way home after the hunt we stopped for gas and I offered it to a fellow sitting at the gas station and you'd swear it was Christmas morning. Lol........ He was sooo.... happy!!!
