Gunsmith For Pistol Restoration

Guys... I have two old goodies I would like to have restored back to near new condition. An Ortgies 25auto and a post war S/W revolver 38 special conversion. Looking for someone up to 200 miles anyway from the Lafayette area. Trying to find someone with years of experience in restorations that does top notch work. Any recommendations appreciated. Thanks

What do you mean by "conversion"? Was this a British export gun that was rechambered, or something else?

Yes...a victory model re-chambered to 38 special by cogswell and Harrison.

Sounds like a typical postwar conversion. What sort of restoration work are you looking to have done? Just cosmetic, or is mechanical work needed?

Both...the finish is about 85% gone, small areas of pitting, lock up is real lose, if you pull the hammer to fast it jams, etc.

I haven't used their services, but several of my friends in the Smith & Wesson Collector's Association have used Ford's in Florida. They're well over 200 miles from you, though.

I think that if you want a good restoration, you should be willing to ship it to those who really know what they are doing.

I might ask on the S&W forum.
Not being in the collectors circle, I'd probably opt for Turnbull.

The old victory is not really a collectors piece nor is it worth much for resale so a Turnbull restoration really couldn't be justified price wise. I think they would be hard to beat on any restoration quality.

Please keep your recommendations coming...I will research into all mentioned.

I would not want to devalue a collectors piece with any restoration. I do like Turnbull's case hardening looks.
