Yes, that is a good choice. I didn't even think of those. We are "issued" the Pilot gel pens and some Bic pens with a cap. The Pilot are a bit thicker and more sturdy. But I did used to carry a Zebra pen like the one in the article and I just kept getting refills when it ran out of ink. Not only was it sturdy, more so than the Pilot, it didn't come across as cheap and disposable as some other pens.

I have a couple of the cheap department logo'd giveaway pens threaded into the molle on my carrier, does that count as tactical?

I use LSU College of Business pens to support the Tigers! Oh, and when I graduated I managed to have HUNDREDS of them laying around from my old job, haha!

Tacti-cool pens are just that - tacti-cool and I would argue that they are impracti-cool as well.

If I want an impact weapon, my flashlight is heavier than a pen. I also carry a knife. But I carry a gun too, and there are near zero situations that I could conceivably be in where I would opt for a small impact weapon over something else.

Another consideration, big bulky pens are big and bulky. They also can tear up your pockets. Ultimately, the fancy, expensive tactical pens are just not much better than the Zebras mentioned above or even my plastic LSU pens.

They are useful for people who work or travel places that dont allow even knives much less concealed handguns. Last time i went into a courtroom i couldn't even bring a pocket knife. But my pen was perfectly acceptable. DisneyLand, they had security guys going through everyone's bags. Signs said no knives, guns, etc. But the pen didn't get a second glance.

I just can't bring myself to buy a $100 pen that I would probably lose....

So what are some inexpensive alternatives? The zebra... what else?

Boker, CRKT, and Schrade make a few.

The reason Zebra pens are popular for "tactical" reasons is because it's not marketed as a defensive tool, such as the other "tactical pens" are.

If I were not buying a Zebra, I'd be buying a click type Fisher pen or something from Cross.

Just got this one today. It’s by fisher and uses the space pen cartridges. I believe it was $20 and is all metal.
