here's an odd one... my wife is going to europe soon. She's decided she's not going to check any baggage. She has a good carryon but needs a bag that will fit under the seat. Suggestions. Looking for someting outside the box... I've seen all the usual offerings, but is there a... I don't know, army surplus gas mask bag? Or ammo carrier? Or medic kit? or some other totally non-typical luggage idea that fits perfectly that won't break the bank (ie the LL Bean bag for $220 for bag that would barely pack my shoes!).

    BTW, max size allowed is 20 x 17 x 11...

Gas mask bag would probably be too small and so would most of the military ammo carriers I've seen. A medic bag (not a combat lifesaver bag) would work but better the nylon than the canvas. Best to stay away from camo and better to have a solid color. It has been my experience (from flying in a group with others in the military - all in civilian clothes) that camo bags get selected for more scrutiny from TSA/Security than solid color bags. I've always found that backpacks or sling bags work better than ones with just handles.

Well, here's my two cents after having flown damn near 100k miles in the past year:

I'm assuming her good carry-on is a rolling type bag and she is looking for her "personal item" that is allowed. My recommendation for the personal item is a backpack, ideally one with multiple pockets.

I keep this compressable duffle bag in my carry-on incase I buy stuff or something breaks:
    https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics...22789804&sr=8-12&keywords=packable+duffle+bag

It's $20 bucks and allows you to expand your storage options very quickly. It has pockets all over it and is super easy to compress into itself. With this inside of the carry-on, you'll have a 3rd bag if you need one.

As for the personal item, I use this backpack:

I'd recommend it highly as it is easy for moderate hikes and works well to separate all of the items you need at airports.

I have to agree with the backpack suggestion, I use either a Maxpedition or 5.11 based on how much room I need.
Ziplock freezer bags work pretty good for organizing stuff, making it easy to find without too much digging.
I also use the small nylon stuff sacks to sort some things. Laptop computers, IPads, all the electronics gear stays accessible.

I use one of the Veto Pro Packs for service truck tools, but I wouldn’t want to fly with it.
