Many years ago I bought a S&W revolver CTG with a 4" barrel. original grips had been replaced with Uncle Mike's. Stamped on the top strap over the cylinder is "U S GOVERNMENT PROPERTY GHD". I bought it from a registered Massachusetts gun dealer so I assume at some point these guns were released for public sale. the serial number at the bottom of the frame is V 353717. It has a parkerized type finish and has the tightest cylinder crane joint that I have ever seen. It almost disappears when the cylinder is closed. One opinion of the origin of this gun is that it was a "lend lease" navy gun to England during the war. Any help out there to track down the origin of this gun would be greatly appreciated. I made a wise crack at the time of purchase that maybe it would turn out to be issued to John F. Kennedy in the Pacific; they hesitated for a moment before completing the sale!

That’s awesome, man! And hilarious that they hesitated! Give the S&W forum a try. There are a ton of people on there who know a ton about S&W and even some firearm historians you can talk to. There are a couple or different ones, but the one I use and like the most is smith-wessonforum .com. I’ve found a lot of good info through there and the members usually seem very happy to help out. Oh, one more thing... You looking to sell?! Haha

What you have is a S&W Victory Model. The 4" barrel tells me it was not a lend lease as those tended to be 5" barrels. (are you measuring correctly-the way to measure barrels on revolcers is from the face of the forcing cone to muzzle NOT from where it meets the frame)The 5" barreled revolvers were chambered in .38 S&W which is NOT the same as .38 special. The 4" barreled ones were chambered in .38S&W special. Look closely at the barrel markings since I think it says more than CTG (Which is the standard abbreviation for cartridge). Your gun would be worth a bit more with the original grips. It should have a lanyard loop on the butt as well. Pictures always help. PM me if you have any more questions
