Took a ride out to my briar patch to check the berry situation, as I usually wind up late to the dew berry party...

So there is a difference. Dew berries, or so I’ve heard them called all my life, are the ground creeping and climbing plants with all the purplish red millions of stickers, bigger and better berries and harvest is nowish.
They are equally happy in the shady areas as the sunny ones and they make the best cobbler in my opinion.
Black berries here in the south grow thick on a bush with bigger but fewer thorns per inch of green stalk, less
vine-like than the dew berry. I find them less sweet and even bitter at times, but they are around into the summer.
So, if you’re a mind to, get out there soon and load up on the good ones before the short season is over.
If you want a good cobbler, grab a few not-so-ripe ones too so you get the full flavor with a little tart in there.
If I hurry I can get up to the store for some vanilla ice cream before this is done..

They are definitely ready to be picked. Went to my patch this weekend and saw my cousin picking some. Watch for snakes and other critters. I have fond memories of my grandmother taking me out to pick the berries around the cane fields south of Plaquemine. She would make jam and then seal the jars with wax. It was pure heaven. That lady taught this man a lot of neat things.

So that's what they were I thought wild blueberries. They had tons of them at dads place along with plenty ivy and weeds covering the cain link fence.
They had to go with everything else. So it would have a weed-free fence and not look getto

Man, that does look good. I was wishing that they ones at dads would have been ready. But we're still too small but all over the place. Shame they had to go but the other stuff would have been nuts If I would have waited.
He does have wild green onions though

Wife already found the blackberries and made some blackberry syrup yesterday. The kids saw it and had her make pancakes with blackberry syrup for their dessert. They already wiped out the jar she made.

Those are beautiful. My Grandma had a patch behind her house and we used to so enjoy picking them and she would make a cobbler.

Do the plants have thorns? I’m looking for some berries to grow in my yard that my 2 year old won’t prick herself trying to pick

They do have thornless varieties of blackberries. I just planted some along my fence line this past weekend. You just have to make sure they aren't planted near wild berries.

We've been picking wild berries around the house for a couple weeks and found tons of berries ready to be picked when bush hogging my dad's field yesterday.
