That was a crack that appeared after 150 rounds due to a stress fracture caused by an improperly installed receiver extension.

Ouch! Haven't seen that happen (yet). But I have seen two AR's from a local builder jettison the barrel when the front of the upper receiver failed. Builder stated doesn't use a torque wrench, he just "pulls them up tight". Every threaded fitting on the planet has a specified torque range for a very good reason!

Yep. Lots of people think the only thing you need is a Tapco armorer's wrench.

What bugs me even more is when the cool guys state they torque everything to XYZ spec, but they didn't have the barrel nut wrench extension 90 degrees to the torque wrench.

Assembling AR-15's is easy. Assembling them the correct way takes some knowledge.

For future repairs get a proper block but keep this in mind BRASS PUNCH .If you put the lower in a vise upside down and strike the nut on the edge to loosen you will be shocked how easy it comes off . Steel punch will work but brass transfers energy better and doesn't mark up the nut . This way versus wrench puts only a fraction of the stress on the lower . Anyone who says different is someone you want to put on your list of people whos advise you ignore .( If you think lock tite was used heat it first .
