I'm curious about the tech portion. But the demo video wasn't very convincing. The scan took a couple of seconds so its use in public would be very limited. It doesn't seem like you could scan a big crowd as they passed by. The best use would be to scan someone when they were stationary like entering a building or when detained by the police. And even in those cases there are other methods of weapon detection like a metal detector or a pat down. Their website doesn't offer much more information. You can request a demo so maybe you get the necessary info at that point. The facial recognition is interesting because it has to have access to some sort of database to match to. At a school, each student could be entered. A scan of someone would reveal if they were a student there or not. Or if the person had been expelled. But the average person walking down the street, what database would the device pull from? When the police get a warrant, they don't put a picture into any database.

So it's a longer range metal detector, basically. I'm calling ******** on it being effective.

If they do go into production and public use as advertised, things will take care of themselves. After a few good citizens ID a few gun toting folks and bring public attention to them, be they permitted carriers, undercover LEO, federal marshal, criminal, etc, won’t be long before the fad will just die

    Can you say false positives?

Pocket full of change, notebook metal binder, aluminum foil under your hat, rodeo belt buckle, steel toe boots, ring of keys like a janitor, just about any woman's purse, belt or large pocket knife, etc.

Just a thought.... you know those useless CCW shields? This might make those useful! Someone with a metal detector would have no way of knowing if it said useless POS, or FBI, or marshall's service, or local deputy or...

Maybe we should have a 8 hour course on the correct way to use them, then have to send in paperwork with fingerprints and wait 6 months for a permit. Or maybe you would have to fill out paperwork and the salesman would have to call the Sheriffs office and run a background check before you can buy one. We can't just have any idiot running around with one of those things in his pocket.

If their price point holds at c. $1000, there won't be very many people getting this.

These are much cheaper, and have been around for quite some time:

The theory is good, the practice not so much. It's relying on ranging and time-domain reflectometry to "guess" at the size of a metal object. The reason I say the theory is good is because you can do this...but in practice this requires a larger receiving area with high resolution receivers to begin to be accurate. (a more valid, and useful, application of this technology is in WiFi "beamforming")

At the very best this case will "ping" metal objects nearby and attempt to filter the noise from anything in the vicinity...be it rebar in the floor/walls/ceiling or innocuous metal objects like cups and equipment. You can't reliably image something at 40' (or even 5') with such a small antenna array.
